Culinary adventures above the clouds – Our new onboard meals you'll love

Our in-flight food service will be updated to the winter-spring menu on our European and long-haul flights as of 28 January. The new menus will be available on flights departing from Helsinki until 19 May. Our onboard sales and pre-order selection were updated earlier in the autumn.

Celebrating Finnish traditions

The menus on our flights change two to three times a year, and the free meals served on the flights vary, for example, depending on the departure airport. The menus will be updated in Business Class on our European and long-haul flights on January 28, celebrating Finnish traditions.

"In Finland, the cold season has always posed its own challenges to the availability of fresh ingredients. For generations, the solution to the challenge has been preservation – gathering the best of the harvest throughout the summer and autumn and storing it for the winter. Our winter-spring menu celebrates this tradition through a variety of salted, pickled and fermented ingredients, bringing freshness and diversity to the plate in the middle of winter," says Development Chef Sami Oksava from Finnair Kitchen.

The spring season menu is available on our flights until 19 May.

Long-haul Business Class menu offers blackcurrant freshness

The Business Class meals on our long-haul flights combine clear, Finnish flavours with local flavours from our destinations.

"The winter-spring menu is especially inspired by the fresh blackcurrant. In the new menu, blackcurrant gel, among other things, adds freshness to gravlax seasoned with orange and anise, as well as pickled red onion to cold-smoked salmon. The full-bodied, slow-cooked lamb shoulder is finished with blackcurrant sauce. The desserts continue the same story in the form of blackcurrant posset and chocolate brownies, offering a sweet end to the season's menu," says Sami.

In Business Class on our long-haul flights departing from Helsinki, the winter-spring menu’s starters are, depending on the flight, either crayfish tartare with soy marinated rainbow trout roe, crushed peas, tomato broth, crab oil and pickled red onion or orange and anise seasoned gravlax with rainbow trout roe, shimeji mushrooms, blackcurrant gelée, pickled red onion and malt breadcrumbs. In addition, hazelnut-crusted parsnip flan, roasted pear, goat cheese tarragon crème, pickled cherry tomatoes and apple gelée are served on all flights.

For the main courses, we serve slow-cooked lamb shoulder with thyme, garlic mashed potatoes, cauliflower with toasted cream cheese, roasted vegetables, and blackcurrant sauce, and for a fish option, fennel-seasoned salmon, spelt and lobster risotto, vegetables, and Pernod saffron sauce. In addition, there is always a third, route-specific option available.

In long-haul Business Class, the winter-spring meal is crowned by either blackcurrant posset with vanilla crème and blueberries, or a chocolate brownie also served with vanilla crème and blueberries. Additionally, a selection of cheeses with blackcurrant compote is available. On the Helsinki–Dubai flight, blackcurrant mousse is served for dessert, and on the Helsinki–Doha flight, peach crumble, vanilla crème and berries are served.

Due to the late departure time of the flights, on our flights to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and later in the spring to Nagoya, we will first serve a lighter meal and later during the flight a brunch-style, heartier meal. Brunch consists of a breakfast-style selection of starters and desserts, as well as a main course, which can be chosen from three different options.

You can look at the Business Class menus for long-haul flights before your flight on our website. In Manage booking, you can conveniently choose the main course in advance, up to 24 hours before your flight. As a novelty, we have added a fresh and filling salmon bowl to the selection of main courses, which includes sesame salmon, avocado, edamame beans, radish, red onion and sesame seeds, as well as wasabi lemon sauce. This option is only available if you pre-select.

In Business Class on long-haul flights, in addition to meals, we offer small movie treats and snacks throughout the flight.

The wine selection updated already in October

We updated the Business Class wine selection for long-haul flights to match the winter season menus already in October. As usual, the selection includes three different white wines, three different red wines and two dessert wines.

For the winter season, our selection of white wines includes the German Schloss Reinhartshausen Hattenheimer, a semi-dry and fruity Riesling, the French classic Chardonnay Deux Roches Mâcon-Villages, and the French Château de Targé, T de Targé, a dry and fresh Sauvignon Blanc.

The selection of red wines includes the Italian, medium-bodied Dogliani Il Generale Barbera D'Alba, the French, full-bodied Château Puybarbe Côtes de Bourg and the Portuguese, full-bodied and balanced Quinta do Crasto Superior.

As usual, the selection of dessert wines offers two options: the Portuguese, intense and velvety Niepoort LBV port wine, and the Finnish Ainoa Valokki, which is a golden yellow and sweet dessert wine made from cloudberries.

In Premium Economy and Economy Class options depend on the destination

The menus of our long-haul Premium Economy Class will also be updated. In this travel class, you can also choose the main meal using  Manage booking. Choosing the main course in advance is always worthwhile; This will ensure that you get the main course you like, even if it is also the favourite of other passengers on the flight. There are always two main course options available, depending on the destination. On the menu for the spring season, options include, for example, beef in Stroganoff sauce with pearl onions and pickled cucumber, mashed potatoes and cabbage or grilled chicken fillet with tomato yoghurt sauce, lentil rice, green beans and onions.

In Premium Economy Class, a second, lighter meal is also served during the flight, such as a herb omelette with potato and vegetable mix and tomato concasse served with paprika cream cheese flatbread. In addition to meals, you can enjoy a complimentary selection of hot and cold refreshments and alcoholic beverages, excluding sparkling wine, throughout the flight.

In Economy Class on long-haul flights, we serve a tasty hot meal with non-alcoholic beverages and one complimentary glass of wine or mild alcoholic beverage (excluding sparkling wine). The main course varies depending on the destination.

On our longer flights, we will also serve you a light meal or snack with non-alcoholic beverages just before landing. You can easily buy more drinks and snacks from the in-flight selection through the entertainment system and pay for the purchases safely with your phone. The cabin crew will deliver the purchased items to your seat.

Pre-select your main course in Business Class on European flights

When travelling in Business Class on European flights, you can also choose the main course of the meal served on day and evening flights in advance from as many as five different options. There are two different chicken dishes, a meat dish, a vegetarian dish, and a fish or seafood dish, which, in the spring menu, is a filling salmon salad, available. There is one menu available on the flight, so it is advisable to book in advance.

Select a special meal suitable for your diet online

If you have a special diet, you can choose a special meal for any long-haul flight or Business Class for European flights up to 24 hours before your flight departure in Manage booking on the Finnair.com website.

Travel snacks from the onboard sales selection or as a pre-order

We updated our in-flight sales selection with new products requested by our customers already in October. Especially, we added healthy options to the selection, including dried mango chips and a nut bar. We also expanded our oatmeal selection to two options – raspberry-flavoured porridge and gluten-free, unflavored porridge.

On selected longer flights to Europe, there are also several warm food options for sale, such as tomato and spinach lasagna and green chicken curry.

Our in-flight sales selection also includes a wide range of cold and hot drinks: soft drinks, smoothie, energy drink, beers and long drinks, wines, spirits, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

On European flights (flights operated with an Airbus aircraft type), you can also buy drinks and snacks from the onboard sales selection conveniently with your own phone on the Nordic Sky portal. The cabin crew will deliver the purchased items to your seat.

On all our flights – except for our short flight to Tallinn – we offer you complimentary our signature blueberry juice or water. Coffee, tea and other beverages, as well as snacks, can be purchased during the flight service. At the request of our customers, decaffeinated coffee is now also available.

As usual, we offer a one-euro discount on snack products when you buy a drink on the flight.

In addition to snacks and drinks, our onboard sales selection also includes, for example, Finnair playing cards and Fazer's Blue chocolate bar, available in a 250-gram size. The entire onboard sales selection is available on our website

Travelling to Europe in Economy Class? Depending on the route, you can pre-order a sandwich combo or a tasty light or hot meal for your flight. When you pre-order your meal, you don't have to worry about dining just before the flight or looking for a restaurant when you arrive at your destination. Meals for customers who have pre-ordered in advance will be served first on the flight.

In addition to a fresh sandwich, most sandwich meals include a smoothie, a chocolate bar and a cup of coffee or tea. The Northern Choice sandwich meal includes a rye sandwich with cold-smoked salmon, the Captain's Choice a roasted beef sandwich, and the Vegetarian Choice a Mediterranean sandwich with feta and hummus. In Breakfast Choice, in addition to a salami and cheese sandwich and coffee or tea, we serve you natural yoghurt with berry granola and apple. Kid’s Choice includes a turkey and cheese sandwich, juice, Moomin candy, and an activity book and pens.

From the pre-order selection, you can also buy a light, cold meal, such as chicken Caesar salad or rainbow trout salad. In addition, there is a pepperoni mozzarella pizza, a Margherita vegetarian pizza and a ham and cheese panini available.

For flights lasting more than four hours to holiday destinations in Southern Europe, you can order a delicious hot meal such as braised chicken with prune gravy, pear and blue cheese gratin and green beans or game stew with red wine sauce, potato gratin and sautéed savoy cabbage. As a fish option, you can order salmon fillet with creamy cucumber sauce, mustard mashed potatoes and broccoli. You can check the prices and availability of the meal selection when booking your flight or later in the Finnair mobile app or when checking in online. On our website, you can see all the products that can be pre-ordered for the flight.

Meals are planned taking into account the specifics of the flight

When planning meals, we consider route destinations, travel lengths, and flight schedules. On our long-haul flights from Helsinki to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Nagoya, due to the late departure time of flights, we first offer a light meal in Business Class and a delicious brunch later during the flight. We offer brunch-style, lighter meals on these routes before landing, also in Premium Economy and Economy Classes.

Our cabin crew will be happy to tell you more about the in-flight service, which you can also find out about on our Nordic Kitchen page. In our travel updates, you can read more about the service on Iberia-operated flights to Madrid and Barcelona.
