A new era for Finnair Plus starts in 2024 – we’ve answered some common questions

In late January 2024, Finnair Plus program will become spend-based, which means you will reach tiers and collect loyalty currency based on the money spent on flights and travel extras with Finnair. At the same time, we will introduce Avios as our new loyalty currency and bring new benefits to our members.

Before the changes take effect, you continue to collect award and tier points and progress in tiers as before. At the same time, with the updated Finnair Plus program, many of the familiar benefits, rewards, and opportunities to collect and use your loyalty currency will remain. You can read more about the changes here.

We have answered the most frequent questions our members have asked.

When will the changes take effect?

The changes will take effect in late January 2024, and we will confirm the exact date at least one month before.

We will improve Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members’ digital customer service already from October 2023.

Will Finnair Plus continue to be Finnair's loyalty program?

Finnair Plus remains Finnair's loyalty program.

What are the new tier point limits?

We have revised the tier point limits required to reach different tiers to reflect the new spend-based earn of tier points. The new tier limits are:

  • Finnair Plus Silver – 15,000 tier points
  • Finnair Plus Gold – 45,000 tier points
  • Finnair Plus Platinum – 80,000 tier points
  • Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo – 300,000 tier points (with at least 250 000 collected from Finnair)

The new tier limits will take effect in late January 2024. We will communicate the exact date at least one month before.

My personal tracking period ends in May 2024. Will the tier benefits change in the middle of the tracking period?

Together with the changes, we will bring new benefits to our members, update Finnair Plus Gold and Platinum members' internet packages and simplify upgrade benefits.

As a new benefit, all Finnair Plus members will enjoy a complimentary internet connection for messaging on our European flights operated with Airbus narrow-body aircraft. All our members will enjoy the benefit as soon as the change takes effect. Finnair Plus Gold and Platinum members will also enjoy the updated internet packages as soon as the change takes effect.

As a new benefit, we will introduce milestones and going forward you will be rewarded when you reach these milestones. You will be able to collect milestone rewards from your own membership tier immediately after the changes take effect – you don't have to wait for a new tracking period to start. Please note that if you already have passed the milestone limit, we won’t reward you with the milestone reward during the ongoing tracking period.

Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can use their existing upgrade benefits for European and long-haul flights as before until they expire. You will receive new upgrade benefits when your tracking period starts again after changes have taken effect.

Will I maintain my current tier if my tracking period starts again only after the changes take effect?

In late January 2024, we will convert your tier point balance with a 3:2 ratio to correspond to the new tier limits. This means that for example, 30 000 tier points will be 20 000 tier points. When the conversion is done, you will maintain the tier you are on at the time or reach a higher tier. Your tier will be reviewed again at the end of your ongoing tracking period.

Will my tracking period change?

Your tracking period will stay as it is and there are no changes to Finnair Plus members’ tracking periods.

For example, if your tracking period currently ends on 31 May 2024 your next tracking period will start on 1 June 2024 as usual.

How will I collect tier points and Avios from flights booked in autumn 2023 for summer 2024?

When flying on a flight operated and marketed by Finnair, you will collect tier points and Avios based on the ticket type or booking class and the region. You can find the updated tables here.

And if you fly with our partner airlines, you collect tier points and loyalty currency based on the travel class, booking class and the distance flown in miles. Please note, that the carrier code on the ticket must be ‘MARKETING CARRIER’ and the flight operated on an aircraft of the partner in order to collect tier points and Avios. If the partner airline is not part of the oneworld alliance you will collect only Avios, not any tier points.

Can I collect tier points and Avios for flights I paid for but didn’t fly?

There will be no change to the current rule: you can collect tier points and Avios only for your own flights. This means that you can’t collect tier points or Avios on other persons’ flights, even if you paid for them.

Will I also collect tier points based on how much money I spend?

Yes, when flying on flights marketed and operated by Finnair, you will collect tier points based on how much money you spend on your flight and travel extra purchases (excluding taxes, fees, other airport and service charges and travel extra purchases made onboard the flight or in connection with an award flight).

You will collect tier points from flights marketed or operated by our oneworld partner airlines based on travel class, booking class and miles flown.

You can also earn tier points with your Finnair Visa Credit card when you make purchases for at least €1,500 per month.

How do I collect Avios going forward?

  • From flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair based on the money spent (excluding taxes, fees (except for possible Extra fee set by the airline) other airport and service charges and travel extra purchases made onboard the flight or in connection with an award flight).
  • From flights marketed or operated by a partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown.
  • From purchases made with Finnair Visa Credit card.
  • From Finnair Plus partners’ services.

Does this change mean that if I buy a Finnair flight that costs 79 euros, I’ll collect 79 tier points and Avios?

Going forward, when you book a flight with Finnair, you will collect tier points and Avios for both flight tickets and travel extras. In addition to the base fare of the flight ticket, you will collect Avios and tier points from the possible surcharge set by the airline. If there is such a surcharge included in the flight ticket, you can find it in the price breakdown of the booking path under the Taxes, fees and charges as Extra fee. Taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are deducted from the price. The remaining amount is multiplied by each tier’s own multiplier to get the number of tier points and Avios that you will collect.

For example, let’s say you book a flight that costs €79. Of the €79, let’s imagine the taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are €25. This means you would deduct €79 – €25 = €45.

The remaining €54 is multiplied by your tier multiplier:

  • Finnair Plus Basic member (multiplier 6) will collect 324 tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Silver member (multiplier 7) will collect 378 tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Gold member (multiplier 8) will collect 432 tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Platinum member (multiplier 9) will collect 486 tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo member (multiplier 10) will collect 540 tier points and Avios

How many Avios will I collect per euro spent?

Every membership tier has its own multiplier, and you receive tier points and Avios, based on this multiplier when making flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair. The multiplier will be the same for tier points and Avios, so you will always collect the same amount of tier points and Avios from your flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair.

Tier multiplier:

  • Finnair Plus Basic – 6
  • Finnair Plus Silver – 7
  • Finnair Plus Gold – 8
  • Finnair Plus Platinum – 9
  • Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo – 10

How many tier points and Avios will I collect if I pay my flight tickets and travel extras in other currency than euro?

If you buy your flight tickets and travel extras in other currency than euro, for example, in USD, GBP, or SEK, the total amount of your purchase (excluding taxes, fees, and other airport and service charges) will be first converted to euros and then multiplied with your tier’s multiplier.

I mainly fly domestic flights and short-haul flights in Europe. Can I reach a higher tier?

It continues to be possible to reach higher tiers even if you mainly fly domestic or other short-haul flights. Concentrating your purchases on Finnair will accumulate Avios and tier points and for example, favouring our more flexible Classic and Flex tickets will generate more tier points due to their higher price. Going forward you will also collect tier points for your flight-related travel extra purchases. Additionally, our Finland-based members can earn tier points with their Finnair Visa Credit card.

Can I buy Avios?

Yes, going forward, you can buy Avios at Finnair Shop the same way as you are currently able to buy Finnair Plus award points.

Can I exchange Avios for tier points?

Finnair Plus members will continue to be able to exchange loyalty currency (Avios) for tier points. You will be able to exchange 3 Avios for 1 Finnair Plus tier point.

The maximum amount of tier points available for exchange is based on your current tier at the time of exchange. After we have adopted Avios

  • Basic and Silver members can exchange up to 7,500 tier points.
  • Gold members can exchange up to 22,500 tier points.
  • Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can exchange up to 40,000 tier points.

Please note, tier points from exchange are not considered tier points earned from Finnair flights, which is a requirement for Platinum Lumo status.

Can I transfer my existing Avios to my Finnair Plus account?

In spring 2024, after Finnair Plus has adopted Avios as a new loyalty currency, you will be able to transfer your Avios between Finnair Plus and British Airways Executive Club accounts with a 1:1 ratio. Furthermore, you will be able to link your British Airways Executive Club account to Qatar Airways Privilege Club or Iberia Plus account and transfer your existing Avios to your Finnair Plus account.

What does it mean my award points will be converted to Avios with a 3:2 ratio?

In late January 2024, your existing Finnair Plus award points will be converted automatically into Avios with a 3:2 ratio. That means that, for example, 6,000 award points will be 4,000 Avios.

When switching to Avios, we will update the point prices for our products and services. On average, the prices will change with the 3:2 ratio, but some prices may increase or decrease instead of following the exact 3:2 conversion.

Will the value of my award points decrease?

The value of your existing award points will not change when we switch to Avios.

What are the new prices for award flights?

We will communicate the new price table at least one month before the new prices come into effect. Until late January 2024, you can book award flights as usual.

Will Finnair Plus tier members' baggage benefits change in connection with the change?

The change does not affect baggage benefits, they remain the same as before.

Will Platinum and Platinum Lumo members retain the possibility to give Gold membership as a gift?

The change does not affect the benefit, Finnair Plus Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can continue to give Gold membership as a gift.

Will it still be possible to exchange upgrade benefits for two-for-one Classic award flights?

Yes, this benefit stays as it is. You can exchange 4 upgrade benefits for two-for-one Classic award flights for scheduled Finnair flights in Economy or Premium Economy Class.

Can I continue to collect tier Avios and tier points with my Finnair Visa Credit card?

You can continue to collect Finnair Plus program’s loyalty currency, Avios, with your Finnair Visa Credit card issued by Aktia. When adopting Avios, we will update the loyalty currency accumulation – Finnair Plus Basic members will collect 1,7 Avios per euro, and Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Lumo members will collect 2 Avios per euro.

You can also continue to collect tier points with Finnair Visa Credit. You will earn 300 tier points when you make purchases of at least €1,500 in a calendar month.

What does it mean that you will simplify the upgrade benefits for Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members?

You will continue to get the same number of travel class upgrade benefits in use value as before. Simplifying the upgrade benefits means that long-haul and European upgrade benefits will no longer be separate. Going forward, you won’t need to contact customer care to exchange new upgrade benefits, for example, if you would like to use your long-haul upgrade benefits to upgrade your travel class on European flights.

Going forward, Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members will be rewarded with additional upgrade benefits when reaching milestones.

What does it mean that the prices are also updated in Avios with the same 3:2 ratio, that is used to convert award points to Avios?

You can use loyalty currency to pay for your Finnair flights and travel extras, award flights, travel class upgrades and Finnair Plus partners’ services. When we convert our loyalty currency from Finnair Plus award points to Avios we will also update the prices of our products and services. On average, the prices will change with the 3:2 ratio, but some prices may increase or decrease instead of following the exact 3:2 conversion. The work is still ongoing, and we will publish the Avios prices for award flights and travel class upgrades one month before they come into effect.
