Impact of the European Entry and Exit System on air travel as of 12 October 2025

A new European Entry and Exit System (EES) will be introduced for border controls at the external borders of the Schengen area.

A new European Entry and Exit System (EES) will be introduced for border controls at the external borders of the Schengen area on 12 October 2025. It aims to improve the quality and efficiency of border controls by modernising the collection and recording of data of non-EU and non-Schengen nationals at the external borders.

How EES impacts my journey?

Are you a national of a non-EU or non-Schengen country? At the external borders of the Schengen area, border authorities collect information about your identity and travel documents, as well as biometric data, including a facial image and fingerprints. Your entry and exit data will be recorded electronically in the EES, replacing stamps in your passport.

Please prepare for longer than usual queuing times at the border control during the implementation of the new system.

If you are a national or residence cardholder of a Schengen or EU country, you will travel as before, and nothing will change for you.

Depending on your origin and destination countries, you may need to go through a border and/or security control when transferring to your connecting flight. Kindly go through border control and security as soon as possible to make sure you catch your connecting flight.

In case you miss your connecting flight

  • When your flights are on the same reservation, we will book you a new flight if you miss your connecting flight due to EES related formalities in border control.
  • We’ll send you your new flight information via SMS and/or email. You can also see your new flight details in Manage booking and Finnair app.
  • Please note that if you miss your connecting flight due to prolonged border control, the airline's duty of care does not apply.
