What is considered liquid and how much liquid can I carry?

In addition to drinks and other fluids, most cosmetics and a variety of foods are considered liquid.

For example moisturisers, toothpastes, mascaras, aerosols, gels, canned fruit, fish and meat, frozen foods, butter, cream cheeses and yoghurts are treated as liquids.

Usually, you can take as carry-on baggage:

  • Liquids in containers of max. 100 ml packed in a single, transparent, re-sealable 1-litre plastic bag.
  • Medicines and special dietary products e.g. baby food, vital for the trip. You may be asked for proof of authenticity.
  • Duty-free goods in a sealed security bag. The item and the receipt must remain sealed inside the security bag provided at the time of purchase.

When departing from Helsinki Airport:

  • You are allowed to bring up to 2 litres of liquids per passenger.
  • The size of the liquid containers is not restricted – you can take, for example, a normal-size water bottle with you.
  • You do not need to remove the liquids from your bag at the security control.

Present your liquids separately from other carry-on baggage for screening at the airport security check.
