Contribute to sustainable aviation fuel

Join us in reducing air travel’s dependency on fossil fuels

Aviation accounts for around 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions. In addition to CO₂, flying generates other emissions that can contribute to global warming, especially at high altitudes.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is an alternative to fossil kerosene that potentially helps reduce the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels. Produced from non-fossil resources, such as used cooking oil, SAF has a significantly lower carbon impact than fossil-based kerosene when assessed over its entire life cycle.

During combustion, SAF emits similar CO₂ levels as fossil jet fuel. However, while fossil fuels add to the overall level of CO₂ in the atmosphere by releasing carbon that has been locked underground for millions of years, SAF recycles CO₂ that was absorbed during the growth of the biomass used in its feedstock.

Although SAF is a positive step forward, its use in aviation remains limited due to high costs and low availability. As a result, its current impact on the aviation sector’s carbon footprint is still modest. That is why scaling up the use and production of SAF is a shared goal for everyone working to reduce aviation’s dependency on fossil fuels.

Contribute to SAF while booking your flights

When booking your next flight on our website or through the app, you have the possibility to contribute to SAF. The contribution amount is €3–15 per passenger per direction. It's predefined and based on the travel class and the length of the Finnair-operated flights in your booking.

Finnair only purchases SAF made from raw materials that do not compete with food production or harm biodiversity. All the SAF we use meets the strict sustainability criteria set by the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED) or CORSIA. For example, biofuels that comply with EU regulations must reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65%.

While each individual contribution has a modest impact, we believe that every step matters in advancing the use and production of SAF.

Finnair for Business and Finnair Cargo customers can also participate:

Finnair for Business SAF Service SAF contribution for Cargo customers
  • Your full contribution is invested in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that comes on top of all the rest of the SAF we buy ourselves. We do not use your contribution to cover the mandated SAF costs for Finnair.
  • The price of SAF is currently 2–3 times higher than that of conventional kerosene. When we procure SAF, your contribution is used to cover only the price difference. For example, if SAF costs €3,000 per ton and conventional kerosene €1,500 per ton, the difference is €1,500 per ton.
  • Your contribution does not directly increase the amount of SAF used on your specific flight or reduce CO₂ emissions from that journey. Instead, your support helps reduce the overall environmental impact of aviation.
  • SAF is not physically delivered to a particular aircraft. Instead, it's blended with conventional jet fuel and distributed through the airport’s shared fuel system.
  • The SAF purchased with customer contributions meets the sustainability criteria defined in the Refuel EU Aviation regulation.

Follow the progress

We are committed to increasing our SAF usage. The share of SAF in our fuel mix will grow through both regulatory mandates and voluntary actions.

Until 2024, our SAF usage was primarily voluntary. As of 2025, the EU has mandated fuel providers to mix on average 2% of SAF for flights departing from the EU. Any additional SAF we purchase will be in addition to this mandated amount.

Finnair’s total SAF usage

In 2024, approximately 0.46% of our total jet fuel purchases were SAF. In 2025, we aim to increase our SAF usage to 1.5%. This includes the mandated SAF, contributions from individual customers and voluntary SAF purchases funded by Finnair and our corporate partners. As we fuel our aircraft also outside the EU, the percentage reflects the share of SAF in relation to our global fuel consumption.

Customers’ SAF contributions so far

Since November 2024, customers have been able to contribute to SAF purchases when booking their flights online. A year later, at the end of October 2025, the total number of contributions was around 70,600. One contribution includes the SAF purchase for a one-way flight.

We invest our customers’ contributions in SAF twice a year and report on the progress in the same time frame. As the service was launched in November 2024, our first reporting period covers contributions from the start of the service until the end of June 2025.

These contributions enabled us to purchase 122 tonnes of SAF, replacing fossil fuel equivalent to the amount needed for approximately 40 flights between Helsinki and Rovaniemi. The fuel was delivered to our home hub, Helsinki Airport, between 17 and 23 September 2025.

Finnair for Business and Cargo customers can contribute to SAF purchases through separate services. Their contributions are not included in the above purchase

SAF funded by public authorities

Finnair applies for allowances to cover part of the price difference between fossil kerosene and the eligible sustainable aviation fuels. The allowances are issued by The Finnish Trasport and Communication Agency (Traficom).

In September 2025, Finnair was issued around 6,000 allowances of its usage of sustainable aviation fuels according to the Emissions Trading Act and the Emissions Trading Directive. The allowances were based on the SAF usage in 2024, when we used a total of 4,685 metric tonnes (MT) of SAF. Of this volume, 769.47 MT were attributed to flight routes falling within the EU ETS scope.
