Finnair's new change/cancellation/no-show fee policy applies to tickets issued from 4 February 2020. The fees are charged in euro (€) and their amount converts into Korean Republic won (₩) for the transaction. You can find more information about the fees depending on the ticket type from the table. Did you know that if you bring your headphones to our flights operated with an A350 aircraft, you can help us to reduce the amount of waste produced during the flight? At the same time, your inflight entertainment experience can improve likewise.
If all our Economy Class customers travelling onboard A350 flights each year would use their personal headphones instead of the disposables, we could reduce the amount of waste by 56 tons every year. This equals to more than 800 passengers in total. The weight in turn directly influences the emissions caused by fuel consumption. Although we handle disposable headphones as energy waste, they can't be recycled.
Our A350 aircraft's entertainment system is compatible with standard 3,5 mm audio connector or audio jack. This is the most common connector size, so using your headphones is easy.
For more sustainable flying, we are testing a new way to distribute headphones to our Economy Class customers during November and December 2019. On our flights to/from Hong Kong and Los Angeles, cabin crew will hand out headphones directly to the customers who wish to have them, instead of distributing the headphones in advance on the seats. There will be enough headphones for all customers onboard.

For Finnair customers who have checked in online, baggage is collected pre-departure at their Manchester location, for example, home or hotel. This way you can head straight to your departure gate from airport security and enjoy travelling without the burden of baggage. Your belongings are transferred to the destination airport where you can easily collect them.
On arrival to Manchester, it's also possible to book the city delivery service. You can drop your baggage with AirPortr after Customs and go directly to the city without having to worry about the baggage during the day. It will be delivered to your chosen location in the evening.

This August, Finnair flew its first “Push for Change” biofuel flights from San Francisco to Helsinki. The initiative aims to decrease carbon emissions.
The flights both departing from San Francisco Airport on the 5th and 7th of August flew with a biofuel mix of 12 percent, reducing the total CO2 emissions for the two flights by approximately 32 tons. The sustainable biofuel is produced from used cooking oil in California, which does not compete with food production or the agriculture industry.
“This is an important step for Finnair to provide our customers with the opportunity to conveniently offset or decrease the emissions from their travel”, says Arja Suominen, senior vice president of Communications & Corporate Responsibility at Finnair.

The travel kit for our Economy Comfort customers renews from July 23 on. We upgrade the travel kit contents and introduce some sustainability improvements. The kit itself will be a carton box featuring artworks done exclusively for Finnair by a Finnish designer Reeta Ek.
The eye mask, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste in the travel kit will be upgraded. The new toothbrush is made of bioplastic containing cornstarch. The new travel kit includes overall less plastics than before. The front cover of the new travel kit features in total four different artworks by Reeta Ek. The cover of the carton box travel kit can be removed and used as a postcard.
The roll-out of the new Economy Comfort travel kits starts on July 23, 2019 and will be completed by the end of this year.
The expansion of Helsinki Airport's border control opens in early July. The expansion includes updates and changes especially for customers arriving from outside the Schengen area.
If you are arriving to Helsinki Airport from outside the Schengen area, you will find your way into the arrival hall through the renewed border control area. EU citizens, as well as citizens of Japan and South Korea, can use automated border control gates, which ensure a swift border check within a matter of seconds. Citizens from other non-Schengen countries will be directed to the manned booths, where travel documents must be presented to the border guard. In addition, there are separate queues for passengers travelling in large groups.
When travelling with infants or baggage trolleys you must use the manual control lane. Customers using wheelchairs independently may use the automated gates.
Our whole narrow-body Airbus fleet is now equipped with internet connection. It means you can enjoy the best in market in-flight connectivity onboard our European flights.
The technology, Ka-band connection provided by ViaSat, allows connection speeds of 12 Mbit/s and even higher, which means that you are able to use for example streaming services during the flight.
You can choose from two options to use internet onboard our European flights flown with Airbus narrow-body aircraft: a browsing package for using e-mail and browsing internet or a streaming package with VPN also for using Spotify and watching TV/movies from different streaming services. The price varies depending on the package and connected flight time.
The service covers most of our flights, but there are some areas that are not covered in Europe, as the satellite connection is designed to support populated areas. Also, due to local regulatory rules, the service does not cover Russia.
You can buy internet access already in advance before your flight through Manage booking on our website. Also, you have the option to purchase the internet connection during the flight and pay it with your credit card, Alipay or Finnair Plus points.
In-flight connectivity on European flights brings also our selection of digital newspapers and other services offered through Finnair’s Nordic Sky portal available for you.
Internet connection and Nordic Sky portal are available for you also on all our intercontinental flights.
We are introducing a codeshare cooperation together with Shanghai-based Juneyao Air and China’s largest carrier, China Southern Airlines. This new codeshare partnership will open 13 new destinations in China for Finnair customers.
Finnair flies daily to Shanghai where you can easily connect to many Chinese destinations with Juneyao Air from 28 June 2019. The codeshare partnership with China Southern started 1 June 2019. Also, Finnair has now moved to a new terminal in Guangzhou, China that enables smoother transfers to our new destinations in China.
Vipps is now available on Finnair.com! You can make payments with this easy mobile application when purchasing flights with Finnair to destinations all over the world.
We expand our inflight entertainment offering for the summer season May-August. You can now enjoy audiobooks on all our Airbus flights with Internet connection within Europe and to/from intercontinental destinations. You can access the audiobooks free of charge via Nordic Sky Portal at www.nordic-sky.finnair.com. Nordic Sky is a complimentary portal that you can access on board with your own device.
Our audiobook selection of 20 pieces includes fiction books from Storytell and nonfiction summaries from Blinkist. There are also children’s books available. The selection is in English, Finnish and Swedish.
We are making changes in our check-in and bag drop services for Economy Class customers at Helsinki Airport from May 7 onwards. Most of our Economy Class customers are encouraged to do check-in by using self-service channels and leave their bags through self-service bag drops in the departure hall. Please print the bag tag at a check-in kiosk before leaving the baggage in the self-service bag drop. Our ground crew guides assist customers with self-service channels. Also, with this change they have more time to help customers with all other departure related questions as well.
Self-service bag drops 207-211 are open all day. During the peak hours, also bag drops 225-229 are at your service.
Customers travelling to USA with direct Finnair flights and customers who need special assistance, like children travelling alone or customers travelling with wheelchairs, will still do check-in and bag drop with our agents at service counters 214-217. Also, some customers may be asked to finalize their check-in with our agent at counters 214-217. Priority and Service desks (201-206) remain the same as before.

Since 12 February 2019, our 31 narrow-body Airbus aircraft equipped with internet connection have had a wider selection of digital newspapers. With the narrow-body fleet, we operate flights within Europe and the Middle East. You may read as many newspapers as you want for the price of €6. Iltalehti, Financial Times and Blue Wings can be read free of charge.
For Business Class customers and Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo and Platinum members, digital newspapers are offered free of charge. On our intercontinental flights, digital newspapers are available free of charge for all customers.
You can access digital newspapers through Nordic Sky portal with your own mobile devices and do not need to purchase internet connection to access the newspapers. Read more about the portal.
As of 1 March, we will no longer offer or sell print editions of newspapers on our flights within Europe and the Middle East. Offering print newspapers ended already earlier on our intercontinental flights.
If you are flying on our Airbus aircraft that does not yet have internet connection, we unfortunately cannot offer you any newspapers to read during the flight. All our narrow-body Airbus aircraft will be equipped with internet connection by the end of June 2019.
The German Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC) evaluates the safest airlines in the world annually and gives them a separate safety index. In the 2019 listing Finnair holds the top position with a safety index of 93.91%.
According to JACDEC, about 4 billion passengers travel via air traffic each year, and it is the safest form of traffic. The safety index is calculated based on performance in three categories: aviation accidents and incidents from the past 30 years, the operational environment and infrastructure of the company as well as operational factors such as the age of the fleet. These factors are then compared with the amount of Annual Revenue Passengers Kilometres.
To encourage booking extra baggage well in advance before travel, the fees for prepaid baggage for flights within Europe, Russia and Middle East have been adjusted as of 10th of December.
If you buy prepaid baggage over 3 days (>72 h) before the flight, the fee is unchanged, meaning 20 euros. If you buy prepaid baggage 3 days or less (<72 h) before departure, the fee is now 25 euros.
Finnair Plus members using Finnair Plus points for prepaid baggage enjoy the benefit of having the same fee at all times when buying extra baggage in advance, meaning 6 000 points.
By buying extra baggage in advance, which is also the most affordable option, you can enjoy your departure with a peace of mind and avoid the hassle at the airport. You can buy prepaid baggage online or through Finnair Customer Service.
When the weather gets colder, and many are travelling with winter coats and in general more baggage, the limited space for carry-on baggage onboard our aircraft tends to fill up or even run out entirely.
For your comfort and more space in the cabin, we encourage everyone to pack carry-on baggage light and tight, or check in the baggage. If there is too much carry-on baggage onboard, our crew needs to remove the baggage to the cargo hold and it may even delay the flight.
We will test actively removing carry-on baggage to cargo hold before certain fuller flights departing from Helsinki to Amsterdam, Stockholm, Paris, Copenhagen and Oulu between Nov 28 and Dec 19. During the test our ground crew will actively remove carry-on baggage before boarding both in check-in counters and at the gate. The test is done to collect feedback on how removing carry-on baggage affects customer experience and fluency of the boarding process. Baggage may be removed, even though it is within the allowance – the goal is to reduce the total amount of carry-on baggage in the cabin. During the test period, carry-on baggage will be removed free of charge.

Finnair invests in customer comfort: new ATR cabins in 2019, new Premium Economy class for long-haul as of 2021
Finnair will renew the entire cabin of its ATR aircraft, and introduce a new Premium Economy cabin class for its long-haul fleet.
These investments speak of Finnair’s commitment to offer a high level of customer comfort and increased choice for its customers.
The 2019 ATR aircraft cabin renewal will include new seats, new carpets and a fresh cabin interior design. The new cabin class, Premium Economy, will launch in 2021 and is expected to be available on all intercontinental flights by the end of 2022.
Finnair has been awarded a 2019 Five Star Global Airline rating by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX). The airline ratings are based entirely on verified feedback given by passengers. Out of the 470 airlines included in the review, only 9% received sufficient votes for the prestigious five-star status in 2019.
The food and beverage selection will be limited during the improvements. Our breakfast will include bread rolls, yogurt, coffee and more, and after breakfast you can enjoy wraps, soup, salads and bread.
The shower cabins and sauna will be closed as of 1OCT. If you are transferring and your next flight will be leaving from Schengen area, you can use our Schengen lounge services. We apologize for the temporary limitations.
The renovations will not affect the opening hours, and you can enjoy the lounge services daily from 5.30 a.m. to 12 midnight.
Finnair has appointed Topi Manner (MSc.Econ) as Finnair’s CEO as of 1 January 2019. Manner has a long career in management positions at Nordea, the largest financial group in the Nordic countries, and since 2016 he has worked as a member of Nordea's Group Executive Management and as Head of Personal Banking.
Finnair’s current CEO, Pekka Vauramo, who will take on the role of CEO of Metso Group, now leaves Finnair. Pekka Vähähyyppä, Chief Financial Officer, will act as an interim CEO during 4 September–31 December 2018.
Surf the internet also on our European flights: by the end of the summer 2018, over half of our Airbus fleet will be equipped with internet connection.

For the ninth consecutive year, Finnair has been named Northern Europe’s Best Airline by Skytrax at the World Airline Awards event in London.
The World Airline Awards by Skytrax are based on an independent survey of over 20 million passenger entries taken between August 2017 to May 2018 and covered 335 airlines.
The World Airline Awards are regarded as the primary benchmarking tool for passenger satisfaction levels of airlines throughout the world. The passenger survey analyses customer satisfaction for the overall airline passenger experience, both at the airport and on board the aircraft: check-in to boarding, seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverages, in-flight entertainment and staff service.
“It is truly an honor to receive this prestigious award for the ninth consecutive year,” says Piia Karhu, SVP, Customer Experience at Finnair. “This award demonstrates the great work our entire team has done to focus on making the customer and travel experience as pleasant and comfortable as possible.”
Finnair’s CEO, Pekka Vauramo, has given notice of his resignation from the company to join Metso Corporation as their new CEO.
He will leave Finnair in November 2018 at the latest. The search for Vauramo’s successor starts right away.
