Pets on Finnair flights

On Finnair flights, pets can travel either in the cabin or in the hold of the aircraft, depending on the pets' weight and size.

You will need a prior approval from the airline before travelling with your pet. We recommend that you make your flight reservation by calling our customer service and notify us about your pet at the same time. Please have the dimensions of the pet transportation container as well as the total weight of the pet and the container at hand when making the booking.

If you already have a booking, you can notify us about the pet by filling in the special baggage form.

If your ticket includes flights operated by other airlines, please also check their regulations.

Pets travelling in the cabin

Small cats, dogs, rabbits and rodents can travel in the cabin, as long as the total weight of the pet and its container does not exceed 8 kg (17 lb).

  • The pet must be carried in an IATA-approved pet carrier under the seat in front of you.
  • We recommend soft pet carriers for dogs, cats and rabbits. The maximum dimensions for a soft pet carrier are the same as for normal carry-on baggage, as long as the carrier is flexible enough to fit under the seat in front of you and your pet can stand up and lay down comfortably.
  • If your flight is operated by Norra, the maximum dimensions for a soft pet carrier are 55x40x20 cm (21x15x8 in).
  • Rodents must always be transported in a hard case. The maximum dimensions for a hard case are 35x30x20 cm (14x12x8 in) (length x width x height).
  • It's not possible to carry a pet in the cabin on intercontinental Business Class flights, as there is no room under the reclining seats.
  • Please note that your pet must stay in its carrier throughout the entire journey, from the departure gate until you have entered the arrival terminal.
  • If you are travelling with a puppy, it must be at least 8 weeks old, weaned from its mother and able to eat on its own.

Pets travelling in the hold

All pets that cannot be taken into the cabin need to travel in the hold of the aircraft. The pet must be in an appropriate container, and it will be travelling safely in an air-conditioned area of the hold.

  • The transportation box must comply with the IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations and it must be large enough to allow your pet to stand up straight and turn around. See IATA’s regulations. Please note that we do not sell or rent transportation boxes.
  • If your pet weighs over 40 kg (88 lb), it must be transported in a strong transportation box.
  • If you are travelling with a puppy, it must be at least 8 weeks old, weaned from its mother and able to eat on its own.

Please note that if the total weight of the pet and its box exceeds 50 kg (110 lb), the pet must be shipped as cargo.

Transportation fees for pets

Pets cannot be included in your baggage allowance, so you will need to pay a fee for their transportation. You can pay the fee by filling in the special baggage form, by calling our customer service or at the airport.

Guide dogs and duty dogs may be transported free of charge.
