Rovaniemi – where Lapland begins

Rovaniemi, “Rollo”, is known for many things, but for each visitor, it feels a little different. For some, it’s the starting point for a hiking trip. For others, it’s a weekend getaway in a calm, northern landscape. Santa Claus is part of the picture, but there’s much more.

In winter, snow softens the landscape and makes moving around feel calmer – whether on skis, snowshoes or walking along quiet forest paths. In summer, the light barely fades, and the day stretches far into the evening.

Rovaniemi is a compact city, and nature begins almost from your doorstep. Many places are within walking distance, and local buses make it easy to get to the main attractions. In a single day, you can easily have time to visit a café, a museum and spend time outdoors in nature.
