Travelling with a wheelchair or other mobility aid

We carry your wheelchair and other mobility aid, such as a walker or a shower chair, at no extra cost as long as there is room for it in the aircraft hold.

You can bring a necessary mobility aid, such as a cane or elbow crutches, with you into the cabin.

Below you’ll find a quick checklist on the most important things to know when travelling with a wheelchair or other mobility aid.

Before your travel

Please let us know about your wheelchair (or other mobility aid) and your need for assistance service at least 48 hours before departure. You can inform us when buying your flight ticket or when booking the assistance service using the special assistance form or through our customer service. You can now check the status of your request regarding wheelchair-related services in Manage booking.

You can carry both electric and manual wheelchairs on our flights. We handle your mobility aid very delicately during your journey.

Please note that it depends on the aircraft type if the wheelchair will fit in the aircraft hold. You can check the aircraft type of your flight when making the reservation on our website or later through Manage booking or Finnair app. Our customer service is happy to help you if you have any further questions or concerns regarding this.

If your wheelchair or mobility aid has a removable battery, please detach it before the flight. Lithium batteries can be carried with limitations. The capacity of the battery removed from the mobility aid cannot exceed 300 watt-hours. If you have two batteries, the capacity of each battery cannot exceed 160 watt-hours. You can read more about the restrictions here.

There are wheelchairs at all airports available for use between check-in and boarding the aircraft.

All our long-haul flights operated with Airbus A330-300 and A350-900 aircraft are equipped with a wheelchair for visiting the toilet. An onboard wheelchair is also available on our short-haul flights operated with Airbus A321, A320 and A319 aircraft but only on request. You can request the onboard wheelchair (WCOB) for your flight via the special assistance form by using the “Additional information” field. Please contact our customer service for more information.
