Sights and activities in Heraklion
Palace of Knossos – explore what used to be the centre of the ancient Minoan civilisation. You can see the remains of the large palace, including restored rooms and frescoes.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum – discover artefacts from across Crete. The collection includes pieces from Knossos and spans from the Neolithic period to Roman times.
Koules Fortress – visit this Venetian-style stone fortress at the harbour entrance with thick walls and views over the sea.

Morosini Fountain on Lions Square – stop at this central square to see the 17th-century fountain with carved lion figures, and take a little break in one of the cafés surrounding the square.

Places to visit near Heraklion
Archanes village – visit this nearby hillside village to walk along narrow streets, see traditional houses and experience a quieter side of Cretan life. You can reach Archanes from Heraklion in about 15–25 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus.
Ammoudara Beach – head west of the city for a long sandy beach where you can swim, relax or try water sports along the coast. The beach is located about a 20–30-minute bus ride or a 10–15-minute drive from Heraklion.
Lasithi Plateau – travel inland to this scenic mountain area with small villages, open views and links to the legend of Zeus. The best way to get there is by driving, which takes around an hour.
Dikteon Cave (Zeus Cave) – this mountain cave on the Lasithi Plateau is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Zeus. Inside, you can explore its rock formations and chambers.
Agios Nikolaos – head east to this picturesque coastal town built around a small lake, with cafés and shops by the water. The journey from Heraklion takes about an hour by car and 1.5 hours by bus.
Spinalonga Island – take a boat trip to this small island with a former Venetian fortress, surrounded by clear coastal waters. It takes around 1–1.5 hours by car and boat to get to the island from Heraklion, or longer when travelling by public transport.
Heraklion wine region (Archanes and Peza) – explore nearby vineyards and wineries known for their long wine‑making tradition, where you can taste local varieties. The area can be reached in around 20–30 minutes by car or 30–40 minutes by bus from Heraklion.
