6.1 General Principles – The Basics
Avios can be used for: flights, travel extras, and products or services offered by Finnair Plus Partners. Current information about collecting and using Avios is available on finnair.com. Tier Points are separate from Avios and are used solely to determine your Tier status. Read more about Tier Points and Tiers and your progress through the Tiers at finnair.com.
How to Ensure You Receive Avios
To have Avios and Tier Points credited automatically to your Account, you must provide your membership number when making a reservation, add it to the booking before travel, or present your Membership Card when using Finnair Plus Partner services.
Important Rules About Collecting Avios
Avios can be collected only after membership has commenced. They are personal to the Member who travels or uses the qualifying service and have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged for money.
You only collect Avios when you personally use the service, not when you pay for someone else’s travel.
Only one Member can collect Avios from each service used (for example, Avios from hotel stays can only be credited to one Member).
6.2 Transfers and Restrictions
Avios may be transferred from one Finnair Plus Account to another via the Finnair Shop online platform, but not to a Finnair Plus Junior Member’s Account. Online transfers are possible only if the sender’s Account has been active for more than 90 days.
Avios can be collected in only one loyalty programme per activity and cannot be transferred to or from another loyalty programme unless explicitly permitted.
6.3 Collecting Avios from Flights
Avios and Tier Points are credited based on flight segments actually flown and are based on the travel date stated on the ticket. They are not credited for unused, or cancelled flight segments, or for flight segments changed to an airline not participating in Finnair Plus.
If your membership number is provided at booking or check-in, Avios and Tier Points are generally credited within 1-4 weeks after the flown flight segment(s).
6.4 Finnair Flights
Avios and Tier Points are granted for all scheduled Finnair (AY) flights purchased at the official published fare, provided the Finnair carrier code (AY) appears on the ticket. Finnair reserves the right to determine which flights, fare types, and ticket classes qualify for accrual.
For Flights Booked on or After 9 March 2024
Avios are calculated from:
- the base fare
- the total price of eligible travel extras
- any airline surcharge identified as “Extra fee” in the booking price breakdown
What doesn’t earn Avios:
- taxes
- other fees and charges
- airport or service charges
- purchases made on board
- travel extras for Award flights
The number of Avios collected per euro spent depends on your Tier, as published on finnair.com. Where revenue information is not available for technical reasons, Avios and Tier Points are calculated based on the ticket type or travel class and the distance flown.
For Finnair Codeshare Flights (AY2501–AY7000)
Booked between 9 March 2024 and 2 June 2025:
- Avios awarded based on ticket type or travel class and distance flown
- See accrual tables on finnair.com
Booked on or after 3 June 2025:
- Avios based on the base fare and airline surcharge
- Travel extras do not earn Avios
Where revenue information is not available for technical reasons, Avios and Tier Points are calculated based on the ticket type or travel class and the distance flown.
For Finnair Leisure Flights (AY2001–AY2500) and Certain Scheduled Flights Sold by Third Parties
Finnair leisure flights (AY2001–2500) are flights operated by Finnair to which tour operators sell seats.
Holiday packages are pre-arranged trips organised by a third-party tour operator, but where the flight is operated by Finnair (scheduled Finnair flights AY0001–AY2000 and AY7001–AY7500). These include packages by Aurinkomatkat, Apollomatkat, Tjäreborg, STS Alppimatkat and Toiviomatkat.
Avios are awarded in accordance with separate tables available on finnair.com.
Travel extras purchased in connection with these flights do not earn Avios.
Exception: If you book a flight+hotel package from tour operator you collect Avios and tier points for the flight part of the package (not from the hotel part). Your earning is based on how much money you spend on the flight, as with other Finnair flights.
What Doesn’t Earn Avios
Avios are not awarded for:
| Ticket/Service Type | Earns Avios? | Notes |
|---|
| Award tickets | No | Already purchased with loyalty currency |
| Zero fare tickets | No | |
| Contract/barter tickets | No | |
| Travel industry discount fare tickets | No | |
| Finnair Plus Money + Avios offers | No | |
| Infant tickets (under 2 years, no seat) | No | Child must have their own seat to collect Avios |
| Flights/services already rewarded through another programme | No | Cannot double dip |
6.5 Partner Airline Flights
You collect Avios and Tier Points when you fly with any of our oneworld Partner Airlines. The flight must be marketed and operated by any oneworld airline.
Avios are also granted for flights on other Partner Airlines if the Partner Airline’s carrier code appears on the ticket as ‘MARKETING CARRIER’ and the flight segment is operated by the partner airline.
Avios are granted based on the travel class, booking class, and distance flown in miles. You can only collect Avios from booking classes listed in the tables on Finnair.com.
Tier Points are only granted for oneworld Partner Airline flights.
6.6 Tier Points
In addition to Avios, Members earn Tier Points for Finnair and other oneworld airlines' scheduled flights. Tier Points enable you to progress through the Tiers of Finnair Plus. The accrual of Tier Points for flights is equivalent to Avios unless otherwise stated.
6.7 Validity of Avios – Important Information
KEY RULE: Avios are valid for 18 months from your last Avios activity
Avios are valid for 18 months from the date of the last eligible transaction whether collecting or using Avios. Each eligible transaction extends the validity of your entire Avios balance by 18 months. However, exceptions may apply. More details about the validity and eligible transaction are available at finnair.com.
If no qualifying transaction occurs within 18 months, all unused Avios will expire automatically. If the value of the Avios about to expire is not minor, Finnair will give the Member reasonable prior notice and an opportunity to use or extend the balance before expiry.
Where to check: The expiration date can be viewed in your Account on finnair.com or in the Finnair app. Finnair is not obliged to issue individual notifications.
Important: As a rule, transferring Avios between accounts, or between Finnair Plus and another loyalty programme where permitted, does not extend their validity. However, some exceptions may apply for certain loyalty programmes.
6.8 Cancelled or Delayed Flights
For Finnair Flights
Avios and Tier Points are granted for Finnair flight segments cancelled or delayed for technical reasons, including rerouting for such reasons, provided you have an AY-coded ticket and a confirmed seat.
If you are rerouted to a flight segment operated by another airline, we will award you Avios and Tier Points based on your original Finnair flight segment. Avios and Tier Points can only be awarded for flight segments flown and only to a Finnair Plus account. In these cases, Avios and Tier Points are not awarded automatically. You can claim missing Avios through the Claim Missing Avios form available on finnair.com.
In cases of force majeure, such as adverse weather or other events beyond Finnair’s control, Avios or Tier Points are not granted, including when rerouting occurs due to such events.
If a delayed Finnair flight causes you to miss a connection with a Partner Airline, Avios and Tier Points are not granted for the Partner Airline flight.
For Partner Airline Flights
For flights operated by airlines other than Finnair, no Avios or Tier Points are credited for cancellations or delays, whether caused by technical reasons or force majeure or other reasons beyond the control of a Partner, and rerouting in such cases does not entitle you to Avios or Tier Points.
6.9 Claiming Missing Avios
| Service Type | Required Documentation | Claim Deadline | Notes |
|---|
| Flights | Flight ticket + boarding pass. For e-tickets, also itinerary or receipt (boarding pass alone is insufficient) | 6 months from flight date | Online self-service available for claiming missing Avios at finnair.com |
| Hotels | Copy of invoice | 1-6 months (varies by Partner) | Check partner-specific rules on finnairshop.com |
| Car rentals | Copy of rental agreement | 1-6 months (varies by Partner) | Check partner-specific rules on finnairshop.com |
| Other services | Copy of invoice or receipt | 1-6 months (varies by Partner) | Check partner-specific rules on finnairshop.com |
Important: Some Partners do not allow retroactive claims at all, and others may limit the number of Avios awarded for certain services. Details of such restrictions are available on finnair.com or finnairshop.com.
Exception to the Rule: Flights Before Joining
Avios and Tier Points can normally be collected only after becoming a Member, but Finnair or Partner Airline flights flown before joining may be credited retroactively if it took place no more than six (6) months before enrolment to Finnair Plus. No Tier Points are credited for such retroactive transactions.
6.10 Non-Airline Partner Services
Finnair has agreements with Non-Airline Partners listed at finnairshop.com (Partner Airlines are listed at finnair.com). The number of Avios collected and any applicable restrictions are stated on those sites. Members cannot claim Avios or Awards if a cooperation agreement with a Non-Airline Partner has ended.
Co-branded Credit Cards
Finnair Plus co-branded credit cards earn Avios, and in some cases also Tier Points, for purchases in accordance with the issuing bank’s terms and conditions, available on the bank’s website. Avios may also be collected from other Partner services as agreed. Some restrictions may apply to the retroactive granting of Avios.
