Lighthouse of Chania – follow the stone pier to this landmark at the harbour entrance, shaped by different influences over time. Wide views open across the sea and towards the old town.
Firka Fortress – explore this historic fort at the northwestern end of the harbour, once built to protect the port and now home to the Maritime Museum of Crete.

Things to see and do near Chania
Agii Apostoli beaches – head west of Chania to this area of sandy, sheltered coves, popular for swimming. You can get there from the town in about 10 minutes by car, 15-20 minutes by bus or an hour on foot.
Elafonissi Beach – travel south‑west of Chania to reach this beautiful beach known for its pale sand with a soft pink tint, and shallow, clear water. The journey takes around 1.5–2 hours by car or about 2 hours by bus.
Falassarna Beach – known for its wide sands and open views. The journey from Chania to the beach takes around one hour by car and about 1.5 hours by bus.
Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island – discover this striking coastal lagoon, often visited by boat, together with Gramvousa Island and its Venetian fortress. The trip from Chania takes around 1 hour by car or bus to Kissamos port, followed by a boat journey of about 1.5 hours to get to Gramvousa Island.
Samaria Gorge – set out early for a hike through one of Europe’s longest gorges, located in the White Mountains. The trail passes through pine and cypress trees, narrow rock passages and small springs. You can get to the gorge from Chania in about 45 minutes by car or around 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes by bus.
Apokoronas villages – explore traditional villages where stone houses, small squares and local tavernas sit among olive groves and hills. You can start your explorations in Vamos, the biggest village, which can be reached from Chania in about 40 minutes by car or 55 minutes by bus.
Rethymno Town – discover the historic Old Town with its Venetian harbour and narrow streets, with the more modern New Town offering great restaurants and cafés. The journey takes around 1 hour by car or direct bus from Chania.
Loutro village – visit this small car‑free coastal village, known for its swimming spots, whitewashed houses and a quiet seafront setting. The journey takes around an hour and 15 minutes by car or bus to the south coast, followed by a short 15–20 minute ferry ride.
