On the flight with children

In this page, you can find useful information and links about baby bassinets and infant seatbelts, children's safety seat, children's mealtime as well as inflight entertainment and internet access.

Baby bassinets and infant seatbelts

All Finnair intercontinental flights have baby bassinets on them, and you can reserve a chargeable seat with the bassinet via Manage booking or in the Finnair App. If you have bought your flights or holiday package from a tour operator, you can still purchase your seat in Manage booking or in the Finnair App.

Our cabin crew will give you the baby bassinet and help you install it after take-off. The inside length of our baby bassinet is 70cm (27.5in), and the infant using the bassinet may not weigh more than 9kg (20lb).

If your child is under 2 years old, he or she must sit on an adult’s lap wearing a separate safety belt provided by the cabin crew, or in a child restraint device fastened to the aircraft seat – this is especially important during the take-off, landing and periods of irregularity (for example, those caused by turbulence).

Own infant seat or safety seat

You may take an age-appropriate child seat or child car seat with you if your child is under 7 years old and you have reserved him or her a seat on board.

Please check that your child seat is approved for ‘use in aircraft.’ There will be a label or text on the child seat, and the manufacturer’s manual will contain instructions for installing it on an aircraft seat. This can be different than the installation in your car. Please take the manufacturer’s instructions with you, so the cabin crew can check the correct installation method.

It is good to acknowledge that we cannot guarantee that your child seat will be compatible with the aircraft seat. In our widebody aircraft, most of the Business Class seats are equipped with an airbag seatbelt and therefore child seats cannot be used on those seats. If your child seat does not fit into the aircraft seat or it cannot be safely secured, we will place it in an overhead locker or the hold of the aircraft.

Window passenger seat is the preferred location for a child seat, but other locations may be possible if the child seat does not obstruct access to the aisle.

Your child seat or child car seat must be a certified child restraint device, and it must be approved for transport use in one of the following ways:

  • Child seats approved for use in aircraft according to the European Technical Standard Order ETSO-C100c on Aviation Child Safety Device (ACSD).

  • Child seats approved by EASA through a Type Certificate or Supplemental Type Certificate.

  • Child seats approved for use in motor vehicles on the basis of the technical standard:

    • UN Standard ECE R44-04 (or 03), or ECE R129 bearing the respective ‘ECE R’ label. The child seat must be also approved for use in aircraft on the basis of the technical standard:
    • German ‘Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft’ (TÜV/958-01/2001) bearing the label ‘For Use in Aircraft’;
    • OR
    • Other technical standard acceptable to the competent authority. The child seat should hold a qualification sign that it can be used in aircraft.
  • Child seats approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft according to Canadian CMVSS 213/213.1 bearing the respective label.
  • Child seats approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft according to US FMVSS No 213 and bearing one or two labels displaying the following two sentences:
    • ‘THIS CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM CONFORMS TO ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS’.
    • in red letters ‘THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT’;
  • Child seats approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft according to Australia/New Zealand’s technical standard AS/NZS 1754:2013 bearing the green part on the label displaying ‘For Use in Aircraft’.
  • Child seats manufactured and tested according to other technical standards equivalent to those listed above. The devices should be marked with an associated qualification sign, which shows the name of the qualification organization and a specific identification number related to the associated qualification project. The qualifying organization should be a competent and independent organization that is acceptable to the competent authority.

Children’s mealtime

Our meal service concept is different depending on your travel class and destination. When flying on our intercontinental flights, meals are included in the ticket, and our cabin crew does their best to offer children their meals among the first passengers in order to ensure kids their preferred meal choice as well as a peaceful mealtime for the whole family.

If you are travelling with a baby, we suggest bringing your own baby food with you on board. We keep a few jars of baby food in reserve on all intercontinental flights, but availability is limited. You are allowed to bring milk and baby food into the cabin in its original, unopened packaging.

Inflight entertainment and internet access

On our intercontinental flights, our extensive in-flight entertainment services, including movies, games and music, are available for your family with options for all ages. It might also be fun to follow the flight route from the world map. A 3D aviation game is available on all our Airbus flights via Nordic Sky portal free of charge.

Internet access is available via Nordic Sky portal for a fee, and it can be bought on board as well as in advance in Manage booking or in the Finnair App.

On top of those, it may be a good idea to bring on board something fun to do for the children, as it might sometimes be tiring for the younger children to sit still for long periods of times at once.
