Why Helsinki steals hearts: Quiet charm, nature, and unforgettable views

We recently asked our Instagram community what they love most about Helsinki, and the responses painted a picture of a city defined by quiet charm, fresh air, and a sense of ease that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Renee told us, “I was only there for a layover, but I liked how relaxed the city was – and everyone was friendly.” Niwit called it “a perfect city for solo travellers… safe, quiet, peaceful and welcoming.” Woonju described Helsinki’s spirit beautifully: “The calm vibe that no other capital city has. And the fresh, cold scents – like xylitol gum.”

For many, it’s the way Helsinki makes you feel. Mylann remembers arriving as snow began to fall: “I loved the calm and the kindness of the people.” Laura spoke of “the slow pace of life, mixed with attractions, museums, cafés and live music.” And Sophia simply said, “The sea and the surrounding archipelago are what make Helsinki so special.”

But one story stood out.

Claudia has visited over 40 times – and carries a permanent reminder of Helsinki with her. “I even have the coordinates tattooed on my arm,” she shared. “They mark my favourite spot – standing in front of Kauppatori, looking out to the sea. The Havis Amanda fountain is behind me, and when I turn left, I can see Helsinki Cathedral through the alley. It’s my favourite view in the world.”

We also asked our Instagram community to share the places that made their trips unforgettable. Once again, the responses reminded us how special this city is.

Seurasaari open-air museum

Magda shared her love for Seurasaari open-air museum, a place she discovered on her first visit to Finland and where she returns every time she visits Helsinki. She said, “The island is just a few bus stops away from the Kamppi shopping centre, so it is very well connected to the city centre. A beautiful wooden bridge leads to the island. Seurasaari combines the charm of Finnish nature with dense forests and rocky beaches with the history of this country. There are many examples of traditional Finnish wooden buildings on the island: village cottages, granaries, boats, and a windmill. The monuments have been relocated from different regions of Finland. In Seurasaari, you can relax, enjoy the charms of Nordic nature, and learn more about Finland's history.”

For Nonoko, her honeymoon trip to Helsinki in June 2024 created lifelong memories. She told us, “This photo was taken on the island of Suomenlinna. Everything: the scenery, culture, and food – was new and deeply moving. Among all the wonderful experiences, the time we spent on Suomenlinna Island was especially unforgettable. The sparkling sunlight, the adorable chicks of different seabirds, and the sound of the sea – it all began from this tunnel located just beside the pier on Suomenlinna Island, which is captured in the photo. My husband and I fell in love with Finland, and we are visiting Helsinki again in July, flying with Finnair again!”

Haaga Rhododendron Park

Carol recommended Haaga Rhododendron Park, describing it as a lush botanical garden known for its stunning display of rhododendrons and azaleas. She said, “The park bursts into bloom in early summer, usually in June, creating an amazing setting with thousands of colourful flowers.”

Uutela

Marjatta spoke about Uutela and Kallahti outdoor recreation areas, nestled in eastern Helsinki and offering peaceful escapes by the sea. “Uutela is a beloved coastal nature reserve with winding forest trails, rocky shores, and even a small farm café – ideal for a scenic walk or a moment of stillness,” she explained. “Just nearby, Kallahdenniemi is quieter still, a hidden esker peninsula where the forest meets open sea, perfect for those who prefer nature untouched and unhurried.” Nearby, Amanda recommended Café Kampela, saying, “There you can get the best pancakes (‘pannukakku’ in Finnish)!”

Mustikkamaa

Roosa shared her favourite place in Helsinki: “Mustikkamaa, with its sandy beaches, sea views, and sun-warmed rocks, is my favourite place in Helsinki. Even though you can see Helsinki Cathedral from there, it doesn’t feel like you’re anywhere near the city centre.”
