A new era for Finnair Plus

Finnair Plus program has entered a new era on 9 March 2024.

We’ve adopted a new loyalty currency called Avios and updated the logic of earning Avios and tier points. We’ve also added some new benefits. At the same time, many of the familiar benefits and rewards have remained unchanged.

What's new?

Award points are now Avios

Our loyalty currency is now called Avios. This means that you’ll be collecting and using Avios instead of award points as a Finnair Plus member. Because Avios is used by multiple airlines, the new currency opens up new opportunities for collecting and spending beyond current options.

Earning based on spending

The Finnair Plus program is now spend-based. You can collect Avios and reach membership tiers based on how much money you spend on your flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair.

New membership benefits

We’ve introduced new benefits as well as updated some of the existing ones. You can now unlock valuable rewards not only when reaching a new tier but also within tiers. We call this new benefit milestones. Additionally, we’ve introduced a new internet package, simplified the upgrade benefits system and added more seats for Classic award flights.

Avios, our new loyalty currency

In the renewed Finnair Plus program, you’ll be collecting and using Avios instead of award points. In addition to Avios, you’ll continue to collect tier points that help you move up on our membership tiers.

Avios is also used by other airlines, including our oneworld partners British Airways, Qatar Airways and Iberia.

What happened to my award points?

We’ve converted all Finnair Plus members’ award points to Avios. The conversion was done at a 3:2 ratio: 3 award points are now 2 Avios. We’ve also converted tier points accordingly.

But don’t worry, although the numbers look smaller, the value remains the same, because we’ve also updated the Avios prices and tier point limits.

How can I collect Avios?

You can collect Avios from Finnair flights and travel extras, partner flights, Finnair Plus partners’ services as well as purchases made with Finnair Visa Credit card*.

*Finnair Visa Credit card is only available in Finland.

How can I use Avios?

You can use Avios to pay for flights and travel extras, travel class upgrades as well as Finnair Plus partner products and services.

If you also have a British Airways Executive Club account, you’ll be able to link your accounts and transfer Avios between them later in spring 2024. This allows you to use your Avios on Executive Club rewards and vice versa.

Collect Avios and tier points based on spend

In the renewed Finnair Plus program, you’ll collect Avios and tier points based on how much money you spend on flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair.*

Your tier affects the final number of Avios and tier points – the higher your tier is at the time of flying, the more you collect. More specifically, your total spend is converted to Avios and tier points with a tier-specific multiplier.

*Excluding taxes, fees (except for possible Extra fee set by the airline), other airport and service charges and travel extra purchases made onboard the flight or in connection with an award flight.

Example: Collecting Avios and tier points as a Silver member

Flight ticket: €605 (excl. taxes)

A Silver member books a round trip that costs €653, of which €48 are taxes, other fees and airport and service charges.

Since Avios and tier points cannot be collected from taxes and fees, those are deducted from the price: €653 − €48 = €605.

Travel extras: €92

The Silver member buys some travel extras – seats and extra baggage – for their trip. Thus, they're spending €605 + €92 = €697 (excl. taxes) on this trip.

Tier multiplier: 7

Each tier has its own multiplier. For the Silver tier it’s 7: Silver members collect 7 Avios and 7 tier points per €1 spent.

Avios and tier points: 4,879

The Silver member will collect €697 × 7 = 4,879 Avios and 4,879 tier points from their trip.

Progressing on Finnair Plus tiers

The Finnair Plus program will continue to have five tiers: Finnair Plus Basic, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo. You can reach tiers by collecting the needed number of tier points.

We’ve updated the tier limits to reflect the new spend-based earning of tier points. You can check these limits in the table below.

Milestones – rewards within tiers

Milestones are a new benefit for all Finnair Plus members. They allow you to unlock valuable rewards not only when reaching a new tier but also within tiers.

Each tier has its own milestones. This means that you’ll receive milestone rewards only from your own membership tier. For example, if you’re a Finnair Plus Gold member, you’ll receive the Gold milestone reward (2 upgrade benefits) when you’ve collected 55,000 tier points.

New and updated benefits

We’ve added new membership benefits and updated some of the existing ones.

For all members:

A complimentary internet connection for messaging on our short-haul flights within Europe operated with Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft
More award seats: at least 4 award seats on Finnair flights guaranteed within Europe and 8 on Finnair long-haul flights

For Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo:

Simplified upgrade benefits system: only one type of upgrade benefit for both short- and long-haul flights
Priority chat service both in the Finnair mobile app and online as well as 24/7 WhatsApp service

Questions and answers

All Finnair Plus award points have been converted into Avios with a 3:2 ratio on 9 March 2024. It means that, for example, 3,000 award points are now 2,000 Avios.

We have also updated the point prices for our products and services to be in Avios. On average, the prices have changed with the same ratio but some individual prices may have increased or decreased instead of following the exact 3:2 conversion.

You can collect tier points from:

Flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair based on the money spent*
Flights marketed or operated by a oneworld partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown
Purchases made with Finnair Visa Credit card, when you make purchases of at least €1,500 per month**

You can collect Avios from:

Flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair based on the money spent*
Flights marketed or operated by a partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown

Finnair Plus partners’ services

As a Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum or Platinum Lumo member, you collect 10–25% more loyalty currency and tier points from Finnair codeshare flights, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia flights (AY/AA/BA/IB code on the ticket). Find out more.

If you book a flight when logged in to your Finnair Plus account, you will be able to see an estimate of how many Avios you will collect from different flights. You will see the estimates when comparing different ticket options.

The estimate doesn’t currently show tier points, but for Finnair flights, you will collect the same number of tier points. In other words, if you see that you can collect 1,500 Avios, you will also collect 1,500 tier points for that flight.

We are working on expanding this feature to other parts of the membership experience.

If you were a member of the Finnair Plus program before we adopted Avios, you may have checked the tables on our website to find out how many award points and tier points you will earn from your flights. This is no longer possible because the logic of earning Avios and tier points has changed.
