Carry-on baggage

As of 1 September 2024, only up to 100ml liquid containers will be allowed in carry-on baggage at all European airports, including Helsinki Airport.

To make the flight as smooth and comfortable as possible for you and all on board, it pays off to pack the carry-on baggage light and tight and bring only the most necessary items with you into the cabin. Especially during the winter season when many are travelling with winter coats and with more baggage in general, the limited space for carry-on baggage on board our aircraft tends to fill up or even run out entirely.

Please note that our ground crew needs to remove excess baggage to the cargo hold before departure and it may even delay the flight. Especially when the flights are full, removing carry-on baggage is very common.

The number of carry-on baggage items allowed depends on the travel class and ticket booked. If you bring a carry-on bag to the boarding gate that you have not purchased or that is not included in your booking, or if your carry-on bag exceeds the maximum size/weight limitations, you will be charged a €60 fee to place this bag in the aircraft hold. Check your allowance below.

Please note that the carry-on baggage instructions vary between airlines. If your trip includes flights operated by other airlines, it is good to check their baggage regulations.

However, it's important to note that this allowance is only meant for the assistive device and does not extend to additional baggage. Read more about assistive devices.

Children have the same baggage allowance as adults in the same ticket type. Infants without a reserved seat do not have their own carry-on baggage allowance, but you can read about pushchairs and car seats here.

Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can carry one complimentary carry-on bag (55cm x 40cm x 23cm) on European flights when travelling with a Superlight ticket, which otherwise includes a small bag only.

Please note that any items you purchase at the airport, including tax-free products, are counted as part of your carry-on baggage allowance.

Please make sure your baggage is within the size and weight limits described above – if you exceed your allowance, you may have to check in your extra bags and pay for the applicable charges.

Musical instruments

Musical instruments can be taken into the cabin when their dimensions are no bigger than 125cm/49in (width + length + height, the typical size of a violin case) and the weight is the allowed carry-on baggage weight at maximum. Violins, for example, can most of the times fit into the  dimensions if your ticket type allows a carry-on bag.

How do I store carry-on baggage on board?

To ensure smooth travelling and enough legroom

  • Please place larger items of carry-on baggage, such as trolley bags, in the overhead bin above your seat or under the seat in front.
  • Small bag, such as a handbag, a laptop bag or a shopping bag, shall be stored under the seat in front of you.
  • Jackets and coats can be hung up on the hook on the seat in front of you.

Please note that the overhead bins above the emergency exit rows are reserved for the passengers who are sitting there.

Restricted items in carry-on baggage

Can I bring liquids into the cabin?

Restricted liquids:

  • All drinks
  • Liquid or semi-liquid foods: e.g. soup, jam and honey
  • Cosmetics and toiletries: e.g. lotions, perfumes, toothpaste, shower gel, mascara and lip gloss
  • Sprays: e.g. shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants
  • Contact lens solution

When travelling with restricted liquids, please note:

  • At most airports, you are allowed to bring a maximum of 100ml of any of the above liquids into the cabin with you.
  • The maximum amount of liquid in total that you can carry is usually 1 litre.
  • Liquids must be placed into individual 100ml containers – larger containers, even if only partly full, are not usually accepted at security.
  • All 100ml containers must fit into a clear, re-sealable plastic bag no bigger than 20cm x 20cm / 1 litre.
  • You are allowed to take 1 plastic bag with you. The bag must be shown at airport security unless otherwise instructed.

When departing from Helsinki Airport:

  • You are allowed to bring up to 2 litres of liquids per passenger.
  • The size of the liquid containers in carry-on baggage is restricted to a maximum of 100ml packages at all European airports, including Helsinki Airport, as of 1 September 2024.
  • You do not need to remove the liquids from your bag at the security control.

Medicines, baby food and tax-free products:

  • You can bring enough medicines for the whole journey. Please take along the prescription.
  • You can take enough baby milk and baby food for the whole journey.
  • Tax-free goods can be brought to cabin unopened and sealed in an airport security bag. Please note: if you're transferring onto another flight in a different country, even sealed duty-free bags may be screened again and subject to that country's security rules. Please note that any items you purchase at the airport, including tax-free products count towards your carry-on baggage allowance.

Which other items are prohibited?

  • Sharp objects such as knives, scissors, corkscrews and tweezers
  • Skates are allowed when departing from Helsinki, but other destinations might have restrictions
