A new era for Finnair Plus starts in 2024 | Finnair Japan

A new era for Finnair Plus starts in 2024

Finnair Plus program will enter a new era in late January 2024. The program will become spend-based, which means you will collect loyalty currency and reach tiers based on the money spent – your flight and travel extra purchases – with Finnair. We will also bring new options for collecting and using loyalty currency – and new, additional benefits.

At the same time, many of the familiar benefits, rewards and opportunities to collect and use loyalty currency will remain unchanged.

We plan to implement these changes in late January 2024, and they do not require any action from you. We will confirm the exact date of the changes at least one month before.

We will also make improvements to top-tier members’ digital customer service that will take place already in October this year.

What will change?

Avios, new loyalty currency

We will adopt Avios as our new loyalty currency. This will open a new world of collect-and-spend opportunities for you in an extensive Avios partners' network on top of the current options.

Earning based on spending

Finnair Plus program will become spend-based, so you will collect loyalty currency and reach tiers based on how much money you spend on your flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair.

New membership benefits

We will introduce new benefits, including milestones and a new internet package, and simplify the upgrade benefits system. The number of seats for Classic award flights will also increase.

Avios, our new loyalty currency

Finnair Plus will adopt Avios as a new loyalty currency in late January 2024.

Avios is the loyalty currency for our oneworld partner airline loyalty programs British Airways Executive Club, Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Iberia Plus.

All Finnair Plus award points will be converted automatically into Avios with a 3:2 ratio. But not to worry – the value of your existing points will not change when switching to Avios, as the prices in Avios will be updated with the same 3:2 ratio.

Collect tier points and Avios based on how much you spend

Starting from late January 2024, Finnair Plus program will become spend-based. This means you will reach tiers and collect loyalty currency, Avios, based on how much money you spend on your flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair. When flying with Finnair, you don’t have to compare the flight distance and ticket type or booking class anymore, as you will collect tier points and loyalty currency based solely on the amount of money you spend with us.

Every membership tier has its own multiplier, and as a member, you collect tier points and Avios based on this multiplier when making flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair. In practice, the money you spend on flights and travel extras will be converted to tier points and Avios with the tier-specific multiplier.

When flying on flights marketed and operated by Finnair, you will collect tier points and our new loyalty currency Avios from flight tickets and travel extras, such as seats, meals or extra baggage. See all our travel extras.

You’ll collect Avios and tier points from the base fare of the flight ticket, the total price of travel extras and the possible surcharge set by the airline. If there is such a surcharge added to the flight ticket, you can find it in the price breakdown of the booking path under the Taxes, fees and charges as Extra fee. Taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are the only parts of the purchase where you will not collect tier points and Avios.

You will start collecting tier points and Avios from travel extras for new bookings made after Finnair Plus becomes spend-based in late January 2024.

Please note that collecting tier points or Avios from travel extras will not be possible if you purchase them on board the flight or in connection with award flights.

Finnair flights booked before the changes take effect

If you book your Finnair flight before the new rules are implemented in late January 2024, you will collect loyalty currency and tier points based on the ticket type or booking class and the region. Please also note that you will collect tier points and Avios from travel extras only when you have a new booking that is made after Finnair Plus becomes spend-based in late January 2024.

Check the tables below to see how many points you will earn for your Finnair flight when you book it before the changes take effect in late January 2024, but the flight is flown after the changes have taken effect.

The money you spend on Finnair flights and travel extras will be converted to tier points and Avios with the tier-specific multiplier. The multiplier is the same for tier points and Avios, so you will always collect the same amount of tier points and Avios from your purchases with Finnair.

If you buy your flight tickets and travel extras in other currency than euro (for example, in USD, GBP or SEK), the total amount of your purchase (excluding taxes, other fees except for possible Extra fee, and other airport and service charges) will be first converted to euros and then multiplied with your tier’s multiplier.

Tier point qualification and collecting loyalty currency on flights that are marketed or operated* by a partner airline, including Finnair codeshare flights, will continue to be based on the travel class, booking class and distance flown, but the distance flown will be changed from kilometres to miles.

This will apply to all flights flown on or after the date when the changes are implemented in late January 2024, as well as when claiming missing tier points and Avios for any flights after the changes have taken effect. This means that all tier point and Avios transactions will be based on miles after the changes have been implemented in late January 2024.

*The marketing airline refers to the airline that sells the flight, whereas the operating airline refers to the airline responsible for actually flying the flight.
In addition to Finnair codeshare flights, you can collect tier points and Avios from oneworld partner flights and only Avios on other partners' flights. The carrier code on the ticket must be MARKETING CARRIER’ and the flight operated on an aircraft of the partner. If the partner airline is not part of the oneworld alliance you will collect only Avios, not any tier points.

Finnair Plus partner services

You will continue to collect loyalty currency from Finnair Plus partners’ services as before. In addition, the possibility of buying Avios from Finnair and exchanging them for tier points will remain.

Finnair Visa Credit card*

Finnair Plus Basic members will collect 1.7 Avios per euro, and Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members will collect 2 Avios per euro for purchase made with Finnair Visa Credit card. You can also earn 300 tier points per month when you make purchases of at least €1,500 in a calendar month.

*Finnair Visa Credit card is only available in Finland.

Reaching tiers

With the new spend-based model, you can collect tier points and reach tiers based on money spent with Finnair.

From 1 February 2024 onwards, it will no longer be possible to reach tiers with the number of flights only – you can maintain your tier or reach a new tier by collecting the needed number of tier points.

New tier point limits

Finnair Plus program will continue to have five tiers: Finnair Plus Basic, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo.

We have revised the tier point limits required to reach different tiers to reflect the new spend-based earn of tier points.

The new tier limits will take effect in late January 2024. We will communicate the exact date at least one month before.

We will also convert your tier point balance with a 3:2 ratio to correspond to the new tier limits. This way you can keep collecting equal amount of tier points and loyalty currency also in the future.

New tier point limits from late January 2024:

Membership tierTier points needed
Finnair Plus Basic
Finnair Plus Silver15,000
Finnair Plus Gold45,000
Finnair Plus Platinum80,000
Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo300,000 (of which 250,000 collected from Finnair)

New limits for Finnair Plus Lifetime tiers:

Finnair Plus Lifetime tierLifetime tier points
Lifetime Gold2,000,000
Lifetime Platinum3,300,000

In late January 2024, we will convert your tier point balance with a 3:2 ratio at the same time when the new lower tier limits take effect. This does not require any action from you.

When the conversion is done, you will maintain the tier you are on at the time or reach a higher tier. Your tier will be reviewed again at the end of your ongoing tracking period.

Example 1: Finnair Plus Silver member

A Finnair Plus Silver member has 1,500 tier points (as a new tracking period has just recently started). After the tier point balance conversion, the member will have 1,000 tier points and will maintain the Finnair Plus Silver tier until the end of the personal tracking period as usual.

Example 2: Finnair Plus Gold member

A Finnair Plus Gold member has 120,000 tier points before the tier point balance conversion. After the conversion the member will have 80,000 tier points and will move to a Finnair Plus Platinum tier.

Example 3: Finnair Plus Platinum member

A Finnair Plus Platinum member has 150,000 tier points before the tier point balance conversion. After the conversion, the member will have 100,000 tier points and will maintain the Finnair Plus Platinum tier.

Example 4: Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo member

A Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo member has already renewed the Platinum Lumo tier during the ongoing tracking period with 450,000 tier points, of which 350,000 collected from Finnair flights, before the tier point balance conversion. After the conversion, the member will have 300,000 tier points, of which 233,334 collected from Finnair flights. Even though the tier points collected from Finnair flights will not be enough according to the new limits, the member will maintain the Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo tier for the rest of the current tracking period plus the next twelve months as usual, because the Platinum Lumo tier had already been renewed.

Examples 5 and 6: Finnair Plus Lifetime members

A Finnair Plus Lifetime Gold member has 3,000,000 Lifetime tier points before the tier point balance conversion. After the conversion the member will have 2,000,000 Lifetime tier points and will maintain the Finnair Plus Lifetime Gold membership.

Similarly, a Finnair Plus Lifetime Platinum member with 5,000,000 Lifetime tier points before the tier point balance conversion will have 3,333,334 Lifetime tier points after the conversion and will maintain the Finnair Plus Lifetime Platinum membership.

New and updated benefits for members

Milestones within tiers

We will introduce a new benefit, milestones, to reward you within tiers. A milestone is a point limit within existing tiers, and starting from late January 2024, you will be rewarded when reaching these milestones.

As a milestone reward, Finnair Plus Basic members will get extra Avios, Silver members Lounge Passes and Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members more upgrade benefits.

You will collect milestones only from your own membership tier. For example, if you are a Finnair Plus Gold member, you will be able to get milestones for the Gold tier.

You can start collecting milestones from your own membership tier immediately after the changes take effect – you don't have to wait for a new tracking period to start.

*One-time lounge visit for one person at Helsinki Airport, either Finnair Business Lounge in the non-Schengen area or Finnair Lounge in the Schengen area. Lounge Pass can only be used in connection with a Finnair flight (AY code on the ticket and flight operated by Finnair or Norra).

Please note that if you already have passed the milestone limit before late January, we won’t reward you with the milestone reward during the ongoing tracking period. For example, if you are a Basic member and you already have 12,500 tier points after the conversion, you will not be rewarded with the Basic tier’s milestone during the ongoing tracking period.

Travel class upgrade benefits

We will simplify the upgrade benefits granted for Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members in late January 2024.

Instead of separate long-haul and European upgrade benefits, there will be just one type of upgrade benefit. This will bring more flexibility for you: you can choose if you wish to use your benefits for long-haul or short-haul flights.

One new upgrade benefit equals one current European upgrade benefit. The required number of upgrade benefits will vary between long-haul and short-haul flights and the travel class.

You will continue to get as many travel class upgrade benefits as before when you reach the Gold, Platinum or Platinum Lumo tier.

The prices for travel class upgrades with upgrade benefits will not rise when we implement the change in late January 2024. After the change, upgrading from Premium Economy to Business Class will require fewer upgrade benefits than before and upgrading from Economy Class to Premium Economy or from Economy Class to Business Class will remain the same.

And not to worry – you can still use your long-haul and European upgrade benefits as before until they expire.

More seats for award flights

We will increase the number of Classic award seats and guarantee at least 4 award seats on Finnair flights within Europe and 8 on Finnair long-haul flights*, so you will have better possibilities to use your Avios for award flights.

The increased number of award seats will be available for booking from 1 November 2023 onwards for flights departing on or after 1 February 2024.

You can also use Business Class and Premium Economy award seats for travel class upgrades.

Questions and answers

Loyalty currency in Finnair Plus refers to the currency you collect based on your purchases. With the currency you can, for example, purchase flights and travel extras.

So far, Finnair Plus award points have been our loyalty currency, and early next year award points will be converted to Avios.

In late January 2024, all Finnair Plus award points will be converted automatically into Avios with a 3:2 ratio. That means that, for example, 3,000 award points will be 2,000 Avios.

When switching to Avios, we will also update the point prices for our products and services. On average, the prices will change with the 3:2 ratio, but some prices may increase or decrease instead of following the exact 3:2 conversion. We will publish the Avios prices one month before they come into effect.

From late January 2024 onwards, you will collect tier points from:

  • Flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair based on the money spent*
  • Flights marketed or operated by a oneworld partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown
  • Purchases made with Finnair Visa Credit card, when you make purchases of at least €1,500 per month**

From late January 2024 onwards, you will collect our new loyalty currency, Avios, from:

  • Flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair based on the money spent*
  • Flights marketed or operated by a partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown
  • Purchases made with Finnair Visa Credit card**
  • Finnair Plus partners’ services

As a Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum or Platinum Lumo member, you will continue to collect 10–25% more loyalty currency and tier points from Finnair codeshare flights, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia flights (AY/AA/BA/IB code on the ticket). Find out more.

*Excluding taxes, fees, other airport and service charges and travel extra purchases made on board the flight or in connection with an award flight.
**Finnair Visa Credit card is only available in Finland.

In late January 2024, we will convert your tier point balance with a 3:2 ratio to correspond to the new tier limits. This does not require any action from you.

When the conversion is done, you will maintain the tier you are on at the time or reach a higher tier. Your tier will be reviewed again at the end of your ongoing tracking period.

In late January 2024, Finnair Plus program will become spend-based. Starting from 1 February 2024 it is not possible to reach tiers based on the number of flights only. At the same time, we will remove the number of flights from members’ Finnair Plus profile.

Until then, we will count all the scheduled Finnair or other oneworld airlines’ flights that you have flown. If you have flown enough qualified flights or collected enough tier points by 31 January 2024 to renew your current tier, you will maintain your tier. Or, if you have flown enough qualified flights or collected enough tier points by 31 January 2024 to qualify for a higher tier, you will move up to a higher tier.

Going forward, when you book a flight with Finnair, you will collect tier points and Avios for both flight tickets and travel extras. In addition to the base fare of the flight ticket, you will collect Avios and tier points from the possible surcharge set by the airline. If there is such a surcharge included in the flight ticket, you can find it in the price breakdown of the booking path under the Taxes, fees and charges as Extra fee. Taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are deducted from the price. The remaining amount is multiplied by each tier’s own multiplier to get the number of tier points and Avios that you will collect.

For example, let’s say you book a flight that costs €500. Of the €500, let’s imagine the taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are €25. This means you would deduct €500 – €25 = €475.

The remaining €475 is multiplied by your tier multiplier like in the table below:

Membership tierMultiplierTotal amount of tier points and Avios for €475
Finnair Plus Basic62,850 tier points and Avios
Finnair Plus Silver73,325 tier points and Avios
Finnair Plus Gold83,800 tier points and Avios
Finnair Plus Platinum94,275 tier points and Avios
Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo104,750 tier points and Avios

Taxes, fees and other airport and service charges vary depending on the destination.

You can see the price breakdown on our website at the “Review your purchase” step before proceeding to payment. You collect Avios and tier points from the base fare of the flight ticket, the total price of travel extras and the possible surcharge set by the airline. If there is such a surcharge included in the flight ticket, you can find it in the price breakdown under the Taxes, fees and charges as Extra fee.

Please note that you will not collect tier points or Avios for surcharges paid in connection with award flights.

Tier points and Avios can’t be collected from award flights, nor from the surcharges or travel extras purchased in connection with award flights.

You will continue to get upgrade benefits when reaching the Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum or Platinum Lumo tier. On top of this, you will be rewarded with more upgrade benefits when reaching Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum or Platinum Lumo milestones.

A Lounge Pass is a milestone benefit for Finnair Plus Silver members. A Lounge Pass entitles to one-time lounge visit for one person at Helsinki Airport, either Finnair Business Lounge in the non-Schengen area or Finnair Lounge in the Schengen area.

You can use your Lounge Pass in connection with any Finnair flight (AY code on the ticket and flight operated by Finnair or Norra) by walking to the lounge and requesting access.

We will update the changes to our systems in phases over a few days in late January 2024. We are still working on implementation details, which is why the exact date of the changes is not yet available. We will communicate the exact date at least one month before the changes take effect.
