Makia winter coats keep our crew warm in the Northern climate

From November 2024 Finnair and Norra cabin crew and airport customer service personnel will start using warm Makia winter coats to keep them toasty in the cold Northern climate.

The Finnair coat by Helsinki-based clothing company Makia is an exclusive item of clothing and part of the official uniform for our cabin crew and airport customer service personnel with details and a look designed to serve the needs of our team – whether their work takes them to Ivalo, Munich or New York.

The new Makia winter coat has now become a part of our decades old uniform history. Over the years, our employees have worn Finnish, timeless creations by for example Marimekko, Vuokko and Pertti Palmrooth. The winter styles throughout history have included, for example, trench coats and fur hats – worn all winter long, even on sunny routes.

Finnair coat complements the current uniform

Finnair's current uniform is designed by Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen and has been in use since 2011. The uniforms are designed to fit well and be comfortable for the wearer, with a timeless feel of traditional meeting the modern. The uniforms are designed with aviation safety in mind and have special features to increase functionality.

The exclusive Finnair coat complements the current uniform, is contemporary and elevates the uniforms to a more modern feel. At the same time, it is designed to fit everyone.

"Finnair shares many values with Makia, which is a good starting point for a design process. Feedback from our crews has been positive. The practical, gender-neutral, carefully designed coat is a certain hit”, says Lotta Prinssi, who led the design process at Finnair.

Coat to meet crew needs

The new coat is based on the Makia Finnair Jacket, which was part of the Makia AY100 collection launched in autumn 2023 to celebrate Finnair’s 100-year journey. The jacket was very popular with both customers and employees, which led to the idea of further cooperation.

The details of the unisex winter coat are designed to meet the needs of our crew. The long design and fully recycled polyester filling help keep our crew warm even in the most northern destinations of our route network.

The new jacket has already gained praise from its users:

"The coat is absolutely lovely! It's thick, warm and long enough. The first thing I noticed was the big hood, which provides good protection from wind and rain. Everyone I know has been excited about the new coat," says cabin crew member Karoliina Virtakoski.

"The coat is fantastically warm, soft and a great way to combat the darkness and cold of the Nordics. The blue colour is also very pleasant. The coat is a good update to the uniform," says Miika Aitto-oja, another cabin crew member.
