Push for change

Changes begin with small actions. Although we can’t change the world at the push of a button, we can start on a journey towards a more sustainable future.

Offset flight emissions

Offset the CO2 emissions of your flight by supporting an emissions reduction project. Donate €1 for a round trip within Finland, €2 for a round trip within Europe, or €6 for an intercontinental round trip. Donations will go in full to an emissions reduction project in Mozambique.

Buy biofuel

Biofuel can reduce emissions by 60–80 % when compared to the same amount of fossil fuel. Aviation fuel has a maximum of 50% biocomponent, and typically contains a few percent of biofuel. The biofuel we use has been produced from used cooking oil. Buy biofuel for €10, €20 or €65.

Offset or lower your CO2 emissions

You can offset the CO2 emissions of your flight by supporting a project to promote the introduction of efficient cook stoves in Mozambique. The project will reduce the felling of local forests for firewood, supporting the conservation of carbon sinks. The project will also have positive social effects on the lives of women and girls. Our partner in this project is NEFCO, a financial institution established by the Nordic governments to finance sustainable green growth and climate projects.

Support for biofuel will go directly to flights flown using biofuel. The biofuel for Finnair flights is sourced from SkyNRG in California and is produced from used cooking oil. Biofuel is currently three to five times more expensive than conventional jet fuel. Biofuel is not widely available and its distribution network is still limited, although this situation will only improve as the use of biofuel becomes more widespread.

Aviation fuel has a maximum of 50% biocomponent and typically contains a few percentage of biofuel. The price for biofuel quoted here for flights within Finland, European and intercontinental round trips, is based on a scenario where the aviation fuel used contains a 15% biofuel component and all passengers on the flight have chosen to support the use of biofuel.

Towards more sustainable flights

All change requires persistent work. This is why we are working in a number of ways to reduce the environmental impacts of air travel.

In response to customer wishes, we are now offering our customers a chance to offset or mitigate emissions. A consumer research study we conducted in the summer of 2018 shows that the majority of Finns are ready to pay to reduce the emissions caused by air travel if the proceeds from any additional charges go directly to environmental work and to support sustainability. Respondents considered promoting the use of biofuels and carbon sinks to be the best ways to reduce the environmental impacts of flying. This is why we are pleased to offer these options to our customers.

The aviation sector is committed to improving fuel efficiency by 1.5% a year to reach carbon neutral growth from 2020 and beyond, and to halving total emissions from the 2005 level by 2050. In addition, Finnair’s own target is to cut carbon dioxide emissions by emissions per revenue ton kilometre flown by 17% during 2013–2020.

Fuel consumption accounts for most of the environmental impacts of flying. We have invested in modern fuel-efficient aircraft: our new Airbus A350 aircraft generate around 25% less emissions that previous generation aircraft.

We always aim to fly the shortest possible route and to reduce the weight taken on aircraft. For example, the lighter tableware we use aboard our aircraft has a direct impact on fuel consumption. Weight is therefore a criterion for any material coming aboard our aircraft.

Finnair is a party to the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme. In addition, we pay various environmental based fees in different countries.

People want to and need to travel — we want to offer solutions to make it possible to fly responsibly.
