Checked baggage | Finnair Iceland

Checked baggage

Here you'll find everything you need to know about our baggage allowances for different routes and travel classes, and what to do if you need to take more bags with you.

With most Finnair tickets you’re entitled to at least one piece of baggage free of charge – either a standard bag or a piece of special baggage.

When your flight departs from Helsinki Airport, you can bring your checked baggage to the bag drop the evening prior to your departure

Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members can take one additional bag on flights operated by other oneworld carriers. Learn more about the oneworld benefits.

In addition, Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members may take a set of golf, ski or diving equipment on flights operated and marketed by Finnair.

Heavy and oversized baggage

A heavy and/or oversized bag charge applies to baggage that:

  • weighs over 23kg (50lb) and up to 32kg (70lb)

 and/or

  • exceeds the sum of standard baggage dimensions of 158cm (62in). The maximum allowed dimensions are 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in).

The heavy and/or oversized bag charge can only be paid at the airport. The charge is not collected from baggage included in the Business Class ticket allowance or Finnair Plus Platinum or oneworld Emerald members.

Some special items, for example wheelchairs, certain sports equipment and large musical instruments exceeding the maximum measures may be accepted with a prior approval from the airline. All other baggage exceeding the maximum measures or weight (with the exception of pet containers) can only be transported as cargo.

Please keep in mind that your baggage should only include personal items you need during your trip. We cannot accept larger items, such as furniture, to be carried as checked baggage; they must be shipped as cargo.

Need more bags?

If you'd like to take more bags than what is included in your checked baggage allowance, an extra bag charge will be collected.

When all the flights in your itinerary are operated by Finnair, you can pay in advance for up to three additional bags or sports equipment within the measures and weight of a standard bag.

When you pay the fee online, it'll cost you less than at the airport.

You can read more about extra baggage fees here.

Please note that cash payments are not accepted for Finnair services at Helsinki Airport.

Baggage allowance on other airlines' flights

Baggage allowances and regulations may vary depending on the airline.

If your ticket includes flights operated by other airlines, IATA standards of the Most Significant Marketing Carrier (MSMC) define which airline’s baggage regulations apply for your journey. If the geographically longest or most significant flight of your journey is not marketed by Finnair, but by another airline, this airline’s rules also apply to Finnair flights.

Your baggage allowance is always shown on your ticket. Please contact the operating airline for more information.
