Natural riches in the West

Perth, the capital of Australia's largest state, is often cited as being the most isolated capital city on earth. This far-flung gem is rapidly developing into a cultural destination in its own right, fuelled by the state's powerhouse mining economy. The city centre is experiencing a cultural revitalisation with trendy new bars, cafes and boutiques springing up by the dozen. The Elizabeth Quay development brings cosmopolitan riverside style to town, up until now found only in the city’s bigger and better-known cousins to the east. On the city's fringe the trendy suburbs of Leederville and Subiaco offer a touch of European esplanade flavour to a day's shopping trip.

Further afield, the city's natural jewels begin to shine. The beaches within the metropolitan area are among the best in the country. From Mullaloo in the north to Cottesloe in the south, they offer turquoise water and powder-fine sand year-round. King's Park, one of the world's largest urban parks and the state's most popular tourist destination, perches high atop a hill providing majestic views of the central business district and the Swan River, which is plied by ferries making their way to Fremantle – a charming ex-fishing port turned cultural hub. Perth's very own island paradise Rottnest lies eighteen kilometres off the coast and offers sparkling waters for snorkelling or diving, sandy beaches for sunbathing and diverse wildlife including the kangaroo-like Quokka. The Margaret River wine regionLancelin and Mandurah all offer easy day-trips for the adventurous traveller.

You can reach Perth and its natural beauty with Finnair and the oneworld alliance members' extensive route network.
