Culture, art and events in Oulu, the European Capital of Culture 2026

Oulu in Finland, the European Capital of Culture 2026, welcomes you for a culture journey like no other. Culture, art, a wide range of events and different world-class experiences await in Finland’s northern region. We put together a list of some of the best parts – pick your favourites and book a memorable trip to Oulu!

Located in the embrace by the Gulf of Bothnia, Northern Finland’s largest city, Oulu, charms by blending urban life with Nordic nature and sea views. Fall in love with Oulu’s urban parks, green spaces, coastal landscapes and historic wooden old-town areas. Explore this compact yet versatile city by foot – or rent a bike – while ticking the Oulu2026 cultural events off your bucket list. And don’t forget to say hi to Oulu’s famous landmark Toripolliisi, The Bobby at the Market Place statue.

1. PLAY – Fotografiska Tallinn X Oulu2026, 14 January–31 December 2026

Curated by Fotografiska Tallinn, this photography exhibition by 17 international artists aims to bring play back to our lives in unexpected ways. You can explore whether play has remained in your life – and in what form. At the same time, the exhibition is inspired by the Oulu2026 main theme, cultural climate change.

2. Earworm – Media art from Kiasma, 15 January–31 December 2026

Finnish Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma’s Earworm presents video works in a multisensory way: the works of moving images spread throughout the space through sound. The expressive power of sound is also demonstrated by our brain's ability to make music repeat in our head without earplugs. Be ready to catch some earworms – but with good songs only!

3. Layers of the Peace Machine, 15 January–31 December 2026

This immersive and multi-sensory installation by Ekho Collective sheds light on different aspects of building peace. You can interact with the work and other visitors through movement, hearing, language and cognition.  What feelings or images emerge? What could be your role in peace work? Make sure to book your ticket in advance. Free admission.

4. Eanangiella – Voice of the land, 16 January–3 May 2026

New and traditional Sámi culture takes over the Oulu Art Museum, as over 50 artists and duojárs from Sápmi come together to explore the diversity, resilience and sustainability of Sámi culture. In this large-scale exhibition, you can experience multi-media contemporary art and art historical pieces, duodji Sámi handicrafts from different generations as well as soundscapes.

5. Winter Swimming World Championships, 2–8 March 2026

These World Championships bring together nearly 2,000 competitors from over 40 different countries to celebrate the community and health benefits of cold water. Witness individual competitions in different swimming distances and disciplines within different age groups, an attempt to set a record for the longest continuous cold-water relay, and the Group Water Performance Competition with hilarious choreography, cheerful costumes and upbeat music. As a cherry on top, the world's largest ice sauna will be built in front of the competition area.

6. Via Crucis – Easter multi-artistic street play, 3 April 2026 at 21:00-22:15

The massive Via Crucis street play brings you close to the events of Easter through theatre, dance, music and light art. With 15 choirs and music groups and approximately 360 volunteers and professionals participating, music is a crucial part of the performance.  Join the street play in arctic conditions at Oulu Market Square. Free admission.

7. Leonard Bernstein: MASS, 17–21 April 2026

Four performances and hundreds of performers – MASS is a once-in-a-lifetime event, unlikely to be seen ever again this far north. American composer Leonard Bernstein, known for his musical West Side Story, transforms a Catholic mass into a Broadway-style spectacle. Instead of devout sermons, MASS is filled with catchy rhythms, musical melodies, huge choral scenes and soul-stirring arias in Latin, Hebrew, and English.

8. Tomorrow's Wardrobe, 22 May–11 October 2026

What will tomorrow's wardrobe look like? Showcasing the creative work of fashion designers in a multidimensional way, this international exhibition challenges and redefines the boundaries of fashion showcasing both current pioneers of fashion design as well as the names of the future.

9. Geopark week, 25 May–7 June 2026

Experience the region's nature, history and stories during Geopark Week, which brings together nature, culture and art in an experiential way. Learn about sustainable development themes in practice, create art from natural materials and join a wide range of guided tours to explore the geology and diversity of the region.

10. The Magic of the Northern Festivals, mainly during summer 2026

Would you rather climb to the top of the hill to listen to some electronic music or unwind by the seaside to enjoy jazz? Finland’s northern region is full of interesting festival experiences, most of which take place during summer 2026. Step on a bus that takes you to the middle of the wild northern periphery and get ready to discover some of the most unique festivals in Europe.

11. The Best Saunas in Europe – Tuira Sauna Festival, 5–9 June 2026

Curious to try the world-famous Finnish sauna? This five-day-long sauna festival welcomes all sauna lovers to join – whether you’re a more experienced sauna enthusiast or trying it for the very first time.  Visit a beach sauna, take a refreshing dip in the Oulu River, and experience sauna spells with traditional sauna bathers.  The program will also include sauna art, music, soundscapes and dance performances.

12. Night of the Ancient Fires, 6–7 June 2026, 11–12 July 2026, 29–30 August 2026

Spend a night in a sleeping bag in the Kierikki Stone Age Village in the glow of the ancient fires and experience the mystical atmosphere created by a summer night and a roaring campfire. In the Night of the Ancient Fires, you can get to know a variety of Stone Age skills and learn about life in the Stone Age through exhibitions at the village.

13. Pikinen Poloku Environmental Art Path, 10 June–30 September 2026

Step on the environmental art path going through the beaches and forests of Pikisaari and discover artworks from local artists and some international guest artists while admiring the local nature. The main route is accessible, and the length of the trail is approximately one kilometre. You can access the artworks around the clock throughout the summer free of charge.

14. Climate Clock public art trail opening, 13 June 2026 and onwards

The new art trail Climate Clock will bring six permanent artworks to nature, forests and riverbanks around Oulu as well as to Oulu city centre. As one of the most significant productions of the European Capital of Culture year, it combines art, science and nature, reflecting an artistic vision of how we can combine our creativity with sustainability. The opening of the art route takes place on 13 June 2026, after which you can experience the route at your own time.

15. Midnight Sun Run Oulu 2026, 4 July 2026

The Midnight Sun Run Oulu intended for all skill-levels from professionals to beginners combines exercise, culture, nature and a white night into a unique experience. Choose from three different distances, 10k, 21k (half marathon) or 42k (marathon) and enjoy Oulu's maritime landscapes, cultural sites and art during the evening. In addition, there will be a children’s run for under 12-year-olds during the day.

16. Delta Life Grand Finale, 27–29 August 2026

As one of the biggest events of the culture year, the Delta Life Grande Finale invites you to a free of charge outdoor event at the city’s birthplace, Poikkisenväylä. The event brings together stories and future visions of the region and Europe’s waterways in a carnival-like spirit, with the aim of promoting world peace. The life show takes place on a unique delta stage built on water, and in addition, you can follow the Air Guitar World Championship contest each night.

17. Lumo Art & Tech Festival, 13–22 November 2026

The already beloved Lumo Light Festival will expand this year to Lumo Art & Tech Festival, combining art and technology in a magnificent way. The festival invites creative people from the digital art and technology sectors from around the world to Oulu for seminars, conferences and other events.

18. Oulu Sinfonia: Beyond the Sky, 19–21 November 2026

Art, science and technology unite, as Jukka-Pekka Metsävainio’s astrophotography of distant nebulae comes together with Lauri Porra’s evocative musical composition in the darkness of Finnish November. Porra, who’s also composed Finnair’s new music, describes Beyond the Sky as a tonal poem that breathes in the rhythm of the astrological images building the story alongside them.

19. Snowball Musical, 4–19 December 2026

The Snowball Musical, set in the enchanting land of the North, weaves together northern legends while creating an exciting story full of magic, mystery and romance. This Christmas musical premieres on 4 December 2026 and is intended for the whole family (recommended age limit is 5 years old). The show is in Finnish with Swedish and English subtitles.

20. Happy New Year 2026–2027, 31 December 2026

Oulu is the European Capital of culture with 39 northern municipalities. The closing ceremony of the European Capital of Culture in Tornio-Haaparanda – in the northernmost part of the region – takes place on New Year’s Eve on the Arctic border between Finland and Sweden. As the year changes there twice, you’ll get to enjoy music, entertaining performances and spectacular fireworks even more!

Oulu is the European Capital of Culture 2026 together with 39 partner municipalities from the Tornionjokilaakso to Pielavesi and from Kuusamo to Hailuoto.
