American Airlines and US Airways merger 17th of October, 2015

On 17th October 2015, American Airlines (AA) and US Airways (US) will shift to one reservation system and transition all US Airways flights to American Airlines flights. At that time, AA and US will be one carrier - American Airlines - with one website, one mobile application and one set of travel policies and elite benefits.

On Saturday 18th July, 2015, transferring existing US Airways reservations for travel on or after 17th October, 2015 will begin. As of 18th July, 2015 all flights departing on or after 17th October, 2015 will be American Airlines flights. Until this time, AA and US will continue to operate as two separate airlines.

This transition impacts Finnair customers traveling on US Airways operated flights as the operator’s name will change to American Airlines and Finnair marketing flight number will change. Reservations are transferred to the new flight numbers and the tickets are updated automatically.

Due to high volume of reservations the transition should be completed by the end of July. The new flight number information can be checked at My Booking on Finnair website. This change does not require any actions from Finnair customers.

Helsinki Airport will be a quiet airport – number of announcements to be reduced

Flight information and passenger announcements made throughout the terminal will be discontinued from the beginning of June. Announcements at the departure gate and its surroundings, as well as public emergency announcements, will remain unchanged.

Passengers are requested to use the airport’s schedule displays or an available mobile device or computer to monitor the gate and schedule information concerning their flight.

Boarding usually begins 30 to 60 minutes before the scheduled time of departure. The number of passengers on the flight is one of the factors affecting when you have to be at the gate. The bigger the plane, the earlier the boarding will usually start. Finnair gates close 15 minutes before the departure.

The new practice is related to the Silent Airport project implemented by carriers and the airport. The aim of the project is to improve the comfortability of the waiting areas and to reduce the stress caused by traveling. The objective is to minimize the background noise and sense of hurry at the terminal by reducing the number of announcements.

Runway maintenance at Helsinki Airport between 11 May and 2 August

Runway maintenance that will take place at Helsinki Airport between 11 May and 2 August will have an impact on Finnair flights.

Due to the limited capacity of runways during the maintenance, there will unfortunately be schedule changes and some cancellations.

We inform customers of possible schedule changes and cancellations by email and SMS messages. Please check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.

The changes of flight times are automatically updated in reservations and if the new schedule suits your plans, this does not require any actions from you. If the new schedule does not suit your plans, you can change travel dates once within the validity of the ticket according to the seat availability by contacting Finnair customer service or your travel agent. If your flight has been cancelled you can also cancel the reservation and get a refund by contacting the point of sale of the original ticket.

Flybe Finland’s flights will have Finnair’s flight number starting 1 May, 2015

Starting 1 May routes operated by Flybe Finland will have a Finnair flight number instead of a Flybe flight number. The routes are:

  • Kemi-Tornio-Helsinki
  • Kokkola-Pietarsaari-Helsinki
  • Kajaani-Helsinki
  • Jyväskylä-Helsinki
  • Mariehamn -Helsinki
  • Tartu-Helsinki
  • Norrköping-Helsinki
  • Visby-Helsinki

The reservations will be updated automatically and the change does not require any actions from the customers. The change to Finnair’s flight numbers may, however, cause some changes to the schedules of flights departing on 1 May and onwards. We will inform customers of possible schedule changes by email during upcoming weeks.

If your flight’s schedule has changed and the new schedule does not suit your plans, you can change travel dates once within the validity of the ticket by contacting Finnair customer service or your travel agent.

You can cancel your reservation and get a refund by contacting the point of sale of the original ticket. Please contact Flybe Finland for tickets booked from Flybe, your travel agency for tickets booked from travel agency or Finnair for tickets booked from Finnair.

Customer notifications in flight disruptions

If a flight is delayed or cancelled, Finnair will make every effort to inform customers about the situation via SMS or e-mail. Please make sure that you have provided us with your correct contact details to be able to receive the disruption notifications. You can update the information in your booking on Finnair web site at Manage booking.

    Finnair using an aircraft and crew leased from LOT on the New York route 


    Due to a slight delay in maintenance schedules, Finnair is using an aircraft and crew leased from LOT Polish Airlines on the New York JFK route from 23 to 27 May, 2015. The flight schedule remains the same, and this does not require any action from the customers.

    The aircraft is a Boeing 787-800. The crew comes from LOT, and two Finnair cabin crew members join the crew to support the customer service. The service concept on board (meal service, in-flight sales) is the Finnair service concept. The aircraft has LOT's inflight entertainment system, with plenty of movies and other content in English.

    Customers will be informed by SMS and/or email about the change in operator. We ask you to kindly check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.

    Customer policy:

    • Customers can postpone their trip free of charge, until 15 June, 2015 according to seat availability. All other ticket rules apply.
    • Passengers can also be rerouted on other oneworld carriers.
    • Passengers who are choosing not to travel are entitled to a ticket refund as the operating airline no longer is Finnair.

    Customers wishing to be rerouted or who would like to request a ticket refund due to change of flight operator, are asked to kindly contact Finnair Customer Service.

    Finnish Aviation Union's strike threat withdrawn


    Finnish Aviation Union’s strike threat for 19 and 20 May has been withdrawn. The strike threat was related to a dispute of a collective labour agreement applied to a Finnish ground handling company. Finnair was not a party to the dispute in any way.

    Customers who have changed their flights due to the strike threat can, if they wish, change their flights back to original flights. Any changes must be done before the departure of the new flight.

    We are very sorry for the uncertainty and stress that the strike threat caused to our customers! 

    During the strike threat customers were able to change flights with the following conditions:

    • Original travel dates May 19 or 20
    • New travel dates between May 15 and June 14 (excluding May 19 and 20)
    • Ticket could also be changed to another Finnair operated destination. In that case higher fare difference will be charged, lower fare difference will not be refunded.
    • In case of flight cancellation, customers can choose between a refund or where possible, rerouting to destination.

    Fire at Rome airport 7 May

    Unfortunately due to a fire at Rome Fiumicino airport's Terminal 3 on May 6, Finnair was forced to cancel the morning flights AY781 and AY782 to/from Rome on Thursday May 7. 

    Finnair has now resumed normal operations. However, as the airport services are still limited, flight delays may occur and queues at Terminals 1 and 3 are expected. Finnair advises all customers to arrive at the airport in good time before their flight.

    We will continue to assess the situation throughout the day and will update the latest flight information here.

    Finnish Aviation Union's strike threat postponed by two weeks

    The Finnish Aviation Union has told that it is postponing the support strike that would impact Finnair and Finnair's subcontractors to May 19-20, 2015. Finnair is not a party to the dispute behind the strike threat. If implemented, this support strike would have considerable impacts on Finnair traffic

    Finnair hopes that the parties to the dispute reach an agreement and the strike would be avoided. If the strike threat is not removed, Finnair will inform its customers about the possible alternatives to reschedule their flights and other preparations on May 12.

    Finnair suspends flights to Kazan, Samara and Nizhny Novgorod during 1.2.-22.4.2015

    Due to commercial reasons, Finnair has made a decision to suspend flights to Kazan, Samara and Nizhny Novgorod during 1.2.-22.4.2015. Finnair will resume the three weekly frequencies to these cities as of April 23, 2015.

    We will inform customers of the flight cancellation via e-mail and/or text message. To ensure that the contact information is up-to-date, we kindly ask customers to check their reservation on My Booking.

    Customers whose flight is cancelled are entitled to rerouting or full/partial refund. For refund, please use our refund application. Rerouting can be done by contacting Finnair customer service or travel agency. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause to our customers. 

    Change in Indian Visa on Arrival policy after 26 December, 2014

    According to the new policy Finnish nationals who don’t hold a normal sticker visa, must hold a valid and approved ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) applied online latest 4 days before travel and show a print out of this ETA-authorisation to the airline to be accepted on a flight to India.


    Passenger obtains a Tourist Visa on Arrival for a max. stay of 30 days when the following criteria are met:

    • passenger holds a printed copy of an approved ETA
    • passenger arrives on or before the date mentioned on the ETA
    • passenger holds a normal passport that is valid for at least 6 months on arrival
    • passenger holds an onward/return ticket
    • passenger arrives at one of the following airports in India:


    The objective of the visit must be either recreation, sightseeing, visit to meet friends or relatives, short duration medical treatment or casual business visit. If the objective is not one of the afore mentioned, then a normal sticker visa must be obtained from an Indian embassy prior to travel.                                   

    The ETA can be obtained online 4-30 days before travel at The ETA fee is 60 USD (paid online). The ETA allows a single entry and is issued max. 2 times in a calendar year. Applying for a travel permit requires that the person has a scanned copy of a recent photograph and passport information page.

    Holders of Official or Diplomatic passports are not eligible to travel with an ETA.

    Nationals of the following countries are also eligible to apply for an ETA:

    Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Djibouti, Fiji, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Korea (Rep.), Lao People's Dem. Rep., Luxembourg, Marshall Isl., Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia (Federated States), Myanmar, Nauru, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Russia, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Isl., Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, USA,  Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

    Nationals of other countries, please contact the nearest Indian embassy to find out about the requirements.

    Finnair and Flybe have entered into a conditional share sale agreement of Flybe Nordic – flights will continue normally

    Flybe and Finnair have agreed to restructure the ownership of their jointly owned Flybe Nordic venture, and Flybe has agreed to sell the shares that it holds in Flybe Nordic to a potential new majority shareholder or to Finnair. The sale of the shares is conditional only upon approval being received from the competition authorities.

    Flybe Finland currently operates to a number of domestic and European destinations from Helsinki on behalf of Finnair on a contract-flying basis. All flights of Flybe Finland and ticket sales will continue normally.

    Due to the winter storm Juno arriving at the Northeast U.S. Finnair, unfortunately, has to cancel its flights between Helsinki and JFK.

    Finnair offers following flexibility and one change for flight date with following conditions:

    • Ticket is issued by 25.1.2015

    At the same time Finnair implements tiered excess baggage rates. Each customer has minimum one piece max 23 kg free baggage allowance. If in excess, extra bag or heavy bag charge is collected. Pooling of allowances of separate tickets is not possible even among family members.

    Strike threat at Brussels on December 15, 2014

    There is a significant strike threat in Belgium on December 15, 2014. Due to strike in Brussels Finnair unfortunately has to cancel all its flights between Helsinki and Brussels on December 15th, 2014.

    Finnair offers customers the following flexibility for change of travel dates:

    • Ticket is issued by December 11, 2014
    • Ticket travel date is December 15, 2014
    • New travel dates (orig. December 15) are from December 12 until 18, 2014, excluding December 15
    • Change of origin or destination is not allowed
    • Refund if flight is cancelled

    You may change the travel date by calling to Finnair +358 10 804060 or local Finnair Customer Service or to your Travel Agent. If the flight is cancelled, you may apply refund by filling a refund application in order to get a full refund of the ticket fare.

    Please check the departure and arrival times in Flight status. We do our best to contact the passengers on the flights affected directly. Please check from My booking that we have your current contact information.

    Self-service bag drop at Helsinki and Oulu

    Together with Finavia, Finnair has introduced bag drops for departing passengers at Helsinki Airport and at Oulu Airport. With the help of self-service bag drop machine customers can tag and drop their bags themselves. The bag drop machine is easy to use, and the staff is always nearby and ready to assist if needed. Passengers in need of personal assistance can still drop their baggage at the Bag Drop counter.

    Self-service Bag Drop in a nutshell 1. Check in online or with your mobile device. 2. Print bag tag at the self-service kiosk; attach it to your bag. 3. Go to the self-service Bag Drop. 4. Place the tagged bag on the belt. 5. Scan your boarding pass. 6. Scan the bag tag using the hand held scanner. The bag is now ready to go.

    Finnair will not operate to/from Tel Aviv between Oct 27, 2014 and Feb 7, 2015

    Finnair has suspended its flights between Helsinki and Tel Aviv between Oct 27, 2014 and Feb 7, 2015 due to commercial reasons. We apologize for the inconvenience this causes to our customers. Customers with bookings on flights that are suspended can choose between full refund or rerouting via Air Berlin, British Airways or Iberia. It is also possible to change the trip free of charge to any European destination where Finnair operates. We ask customers to kindly contact Finnair Customer Service to arrange rerouting or refund.

    Finnair opens renovated lounge for Schengen area departures

    Lounge spaces above gates 23-26 will be opened after renovation on October 6th at 6 am. New Schengen Lounge will have about 40 % more seating space, new shower suites and a small play area for kids. We apologise any possible inconvenience the renovation may have caused you.

    Finnair renovates Helsinki Airport’s terminal T2 lounge spaces for Schengen area departures

    Current lounge spaces above gates 23-26 will be closed as of 1 July and will be opened after renovation on October 6th. 

    We apologise any possible inconvenience this renovation may cause to you in the near future. We strive to complete this renovation a quickly as possible and, in the end, we will be able to offer about 40 % more seating space, new shower suites and a small play area for kids.

    Finnair Plus Platinum and Gold Lifetime members as well as oneworld Emerald card holders are temporarily invited to the Aspire Lounge on second floor opposite gate 27. Aspire Lounge is open daily from 05:30 till 20:00, except on Saturdays and Sundays till 19:30.

    Finnair Lounge between the gates 36 and 37 is open normally for all non-Schengen destination customers.

    Finnair resumes flights over West-Ukrainian airspace, many international airlines already use the airspace

    Finnair resumes the use of West Ukrainian airspace for some of its flights as of August 27. Several European airlines already use West Ukrainian airspace and there have been no restrictions in the use of the airspace in West Ukraine. 

    Finnair may use West Ukrainian airspace for example on its flights to Bulgaria, Israel, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Eastern Europe and Southern Europe, when it is feasible, taking into account weather conditions and other factors impacting the choice of flight routes. 

    Finnair adheres to the guidance of Eurocontrol, European Aviation Safety Agency and local authorities when choosing its flights routes in Europe.There are still flight restrictions in the Crimean area and in Eastern Ukraine, and Finnair has avoided the use of airspace in these areas since this spring. Flight restriction areas over these conflict areas have built-in safety marginal and they are thus considerably larger than the crisis areas.

    Sky Bistro replaces complimentary cold snack service on European flights on November 1, 2014

    Finnair will introduce on short-haul flights in Economy Class Sky Bistro, a wider mix-and-match selection of seasonal, high-quality foods and beverages combining the best tastes of Europe and Asia . There will also be products suitable for special dietary needs.

    Sky Bistro, which will be available on nearly all European flights, replaces the complimentary cold snack service that had been offered on some European flights lasting longer than two hours. On all flights in all classes, coffee and tea remain complimentary – as does Finnair’s signature refreshment, blueberry juice.

    Hot meal with coffee and tea will still be served on our flights to Canary Islands and Dubai. Depending on the tour operator the meal may need to be reserved and paid for at the time of reservation.

    In Business Class, meals remain inclusive in the ticket price.

    Israel: Finnair flights to Tel Aviv

    Finnair flies to Tel Aviv normally. We continue to monitor the situation closely. Finnair offers following flexibility for the customers traveling to/from Tel Aviv. This flexibility applies on tickets issued on/before July 22, 2014 and the original travel date is on/after July 23, 2014.

    Change of travel date

    • You may change your travel date (inbound and outbound) once without penalty or change fee. Ticket expiry date will be adjusted accordingly.
    • Seats are subject to availability. 
    • The new travel date must be before October 12, 2014.
    • Rebooking must be done at the latest on August 30, 2014.
    • The new booking must be in the original travel class.
    • Please contact our customer service or a travel agency.

    Russia: Finnair flights over Russian airspace

    At this stage, Finnair has not received official information about possible overflight restrictions in Russian airspace, and all Finnair flights between Europe and Asia are planned to be operated normally. If there are any disruptions or delays for any reasons, customers will be informed via text message. You can update your contact information in your booking on Finnair web page at Manage booking.  

    Enhanced security measures at certain airports when flying to the USA

    When flying to the United States from certain airports, e.g. Paris or London, during the security examination officers may ask you to power up your electronic devices, e.g. mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, game consoles and MP3 players. Powerless devices will not be permitted to the aircraft as carry-on baggage. If you are travelling to the USA, please do all you can to ensure that items you bring with you are fully powered, and arrive at the airport and at your departure gate well in advance.
