Finnair allows transportation of small pet animals both as PETC and AVIH. Information about the animal must always be marked in the PNR as SR PETC or SR AVIH with additional information about the size and weight of the container.

For itineraries to/via/from Sweden, Norway, Thailand and the U.S. you need to check with the customer that the documents required for the animal are ok. Please insert the confirmation to the PNR. SR AVIH or SR PETC can't be confirmed without this information. The validity of documents is still customer's responsibility.

- EMD-A issuance is not possible before SSR has been confirmed. EMD creation is only possible from SSR element (not from SVC).
- EMDs are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. However, EMDs can be voided during the issuance day until the sales report has closed.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT TRANSPORTING PETS
No go-show PETC or AVIH shall be accepted without a prior confirmation from Finnair.
Direct transfer for AVIH is not possible at Helsinki airport. AVIH via Helsinki (AY-AY) is allowed only, when the transfer time is at least 3 hours. The customer must have enough time to take the AVIH out in Helsinki and check it in again for the connecting flight. AVIH fee will be collected separately for each flight segment.

Limitations on number of pet units by aeroplane type
On flights operated with A330 and A350, pets are not allowed in Business Class (except assistance dogs) as there is no room to accommodate pets under the seat in front due to design of the Business Class seats.

Preparations and restrictions concerning animals in international traffic
When transporting pets, the animals’ welfare has to be taken into consideration as well as all the country-specific regulations. Puppies should, for example, be weaned off their mother and be able to eat on their own to be accepted for transportation. In Finland, the minimum age for air transportation of puppies is 7 weeks. For country-specific regulations, e.g. regarding minimum age of puppies, and required documents, the passenger should contact national authorities.
The passenger must have an advanced booking in Finnair’s reservation system and he/she has to provide all necessary documents (pet passport, export/import/transit permits, health/vaccination certificates etc.) and other possible preparations (tattoo or microchip, quarantine, veterinary meeting on arrival etc.). Finnair does not assume any responsibility if an animal is refused entry into or transit through a country.
The importation of pets as baggage is totally prohibited to/via some countries, e.g. Great Britain, South Africa, Hong Kong and Australia. To these countries live animals must be transported solely as air cargo under an appropriate air waybill. It is also forbidden to travel with a pet to/via Ireland from outside of EU. It shall also be noted that even when the Finnair policy allows transportation of certain animal species as AVIH or PETC, country regulations may differ from Finnair policy when they shall naturally be honoured. For example the Chinese authorities consider only dogs and cats as PETC/AVIH, all other species shall be sent under air waybill as cargo. Due to these differing regulations it is most important to check TIM (Travel Information Manual) and/or the TIMATIC display which show detailed information on customs and health regulations of individual countries.
Containers: Pet in cabin (PETC)
The maximum weight is 8 kg (17 lb.) for a pet/pet unit including the weight of the container. Only one container per passenger is allowed. A pet must be kept in its container at all times and the container shall strictly not be opened at all when on board. The container shall be placed and kept under the seat in front of the passenger throughout the flight whenever fasten seat belt sign is on.
An IATA-approved soft bag that has been designed for transportation of small dogs, cats and pet rabbits is recommended and they are available at most pet shops. Other types of soft bags may not be used for PETC transportation. Rodents must always be transported in a hard shell cage.
A trained assistance dog for a blind or for other PRM passenger may be carried in the cabin when accompanying a passenger who is dependent upon it. The assistance dog is always carried free of charge. The dog shall be properly harnessed. The passenger and the dog will normally be seated where sufficient floor space for the dog is available, excluding bulkheads and emergency exits. The guide dog is not included in the PETC count. In international traffic entry regulations for live animals shall be verified. There is no limitation set for the number of assistance dogs.
The request shall be done by using SVAN or ESAN as follows.

Part 1 – Legal obligations on community air carriers
Community air carriers have a legal obligation under EU law to accept disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility on their flights and should not refuse transport on the grounds of disability or lack of mobility except for reasons that are justified on the grounds of safety and prescribed by law. This obligation extends to the carriage of recognized assistance dogs.
The legal obligations are set out in full in Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2006 of 5 July 2006 concerning the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air.
What is required at the time of booking?
The customer needs to be informed of the below requirements (point 1) set by the LHR Animal Reception Centre, the authority performing the arrival check of the assistance dog.
It has to be marked in the reservation that the customer has been notified of the requirements before confirming the booking. The customer shall also be informed that without a Preapproval Notice the customer may not be accepted on board the flight. Normal SVAN/ESAN booking in association with the relevant PRM-code (e.g. BLND, WCHC) shall be made.
1) The customer needs to contact the Animal Reception Centre prior to travel in order to receive a Preapproval Notice. To obtain the Preapproval the customer needs to send the following information to the Animal Reception Centre, fax +44 20 8759 3477.
a) Copy of the Pet Passport/Import License from Non-EU countries
b) Copy of the assistance dog's training certificate
c) Contact information: customer's name, e-mail and/or phone number
d) Flight details

What is required at the airport prior to travel?
In order to accept the customer and the registered assistance dog on a Finnair flight, the customer needs to present the Preapproval Notice to the ground handling staff. According to the Animal Reception Centre instructions, a customer without a Preapproval Notice may not be accepted on a flight. In ad hoc cases, always contact the LHR Animal Reception Centre if a customer is not in possession of the Preapproval Notice.
What is required upon arrival at the destination?
All required documents for the assistance dog will be checked upon arrival at the destination, before the customer exits the aircraft. Crew/ground staff may not let customer leave the aircraft until the representative from the Animal Reception Centre has arrived and performed the arrival check.

Containers: Animal in hold (AVIH)
A suitable container must be provided for the animal, large enough to permit it to stand upright and lie down comfortably in its natural position. If the container is found to be too small, a new larger container needs to be obtained by the passenger before the animal is allowed to continue its journey. This results in delays and extra costs.
The container must be strong enough so that the pet cannot escape during the journey. The container must also be durable with leak proof bottom and holes for feeding and ventilation. If the container has wheels, they must be removed or rendered inoperable. When the height of the container is inserted into the PNR, it shall include the extra height given from the wheels.
As a principle, a maximum of two animals of comparable size up to 14 kg each that are used to cohabitation may be shipped in the same container. Animals over that weight must travel individually. Animals up to six months old from the same litter, up to a maximum quantity of three, may be shipped in the same container.
The maximum weight for AVIH on Finnair flights is 50 kg including the weight of the container. Animals exceeding this weight limit shall be shipped as cargo under air waybill. Pets over 40 kg must be carried in strong wooden containers.
Finnair does not sell animal containers but some well-stocked pet shops may sell containers suitable for the transportation of cats and dogs in the aeroplane hold.
Pet in cabin and passengers with animal allergies
Due to an increasing number of passengers with animal allergies, Finnair follows the first come first served principle. If the passenger informs of his allergy at time of reservation, the PETC count will be closed for the flight in question by Finnair. Respectively, if a PETC has been booked on the flight before the passenger with an animal allergy, the passenger with the allergy will be referred to another flight. A passenger who suffers from being in the same cabin with a PETC, but has not informed the airline of his allergy in advance, may be assisted with re-routing, but Finnair will not absorb any additional costs that a rerouting at this stage may cause.
