Lillehammer, Norway

First put on the map by the 1994 Winter Olympics, then made famous by the hugely popular Netflix series ‘Lilyhammer’, the Norwegian town of Lillehammer is now gearing up to host the Winter Youth Olympics in 2016.

The town itself offers a mere teaser of the jaw-dropping scenery only a couple of hours away. Adrenaline junkies mustn’t miss the vast lichen-covered massif and the ten 2,000-metre peaks of Rondane, Norway’s oldest national park. The park is dotted with mountain huts ideal for an overnight adventure. If you’re lucky, you might get to witness a skilled white water kayaker launching off one of Store Ula’s waterfalls.
