Italian charm in the shadow of Mount Etna

Visit Catania, Sicily’s second largest city perched on the edge of the Ionian Sea for a truly authentic but slightly different Italian experience.

Radiating outward from the iconic Fontana dell'Elefante the city is peppered with typical Italian eateries for a great pasta and cafés in which to grab a quick espresso. The city's history is as varied as its sights: the Greek-Roman Theatre is a sight to behold while the Roman Baths, including the remains of the Achillea Thermae, provide a glimpse of the mighty empire. The centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks partly to its stunning array of Baroque architecture. Step from the old world into the new and satisfy your shopping desires with the best Italian fashion and design has to offer on the main shopping boulevard, Etnea.

It's impossible to ignore the imposing Mount Etna as it keeps watch over the city and a day trip can see you hiking to its Martian-like lava fields. The sea is integral to Catania and you can enjoy it at city beaches or more secluded spots like Foce Benate just half an hour away by car. Sicily's other major cities are easily reached by rail from the Catania Centrale station. Do include a short journey to places such as the historic Siracusa or the capital Palermo during your holiday.

You can reach Catania with Finnair and the oneworld alliance members’ extensive route network.
