Extra bags

If you are travelling with baggage that exceeds your baggage allowance, an extra bag charge applies. The maximum amount of baggage is 10 pieces per person.

Charges on this page apply also to customers who have bought an Economy Light ticket and wish to carry one or more checked bags.

Finnair Plus members can also use their award points to pay for extra baggage charges.

Each fee is for Finnair flights in one direction. If your flight is operated by American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia or Japan Airlines, please find out more below.

When all the flights in your itinerary are operated by Finnair, and the flight number starts with AY and the ticket number with 105, you can pay in advance for up to three additional pieces of baggage or sports equipment within the size and weight of a standard bag (skis up to 220 cm). Extra bags can be purchased up until 3 hours before departure.

Standard bag = one piece of baggage with the maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lb) and external dimensions (length + width + height) of up to 158 cm (62 in). A golf bag and skis up to 220 cm (79 in) can also be regarded as standard bags when the maximum weight is 23 kg (50 lb).

Charges at the airport

If you are travelling on a flight operated by Finnair but your ticket has been issued by another airline, or your itinerary includes flights operated by another airline, please pay for your excess baggage at the airport.

The tables below contain the charges for Finnair flights. If your ticket includes flights from other airlines, IATA standards of the Most Significant Marketing Carrier (MSMC) define which airline’s baggage regulations apply to those flights. Excess baggage fees are defined by the airline that is carrying out the check-in. If possible, the extra bag charges are calculated according to the Most Significant Marketing Carrier’s extra bag charges.

Heavy bag charge

If you are travelling with a bag that weighs 23–32 kg (50–70 lb) or exceeds the standard size of 158 cm (62 in), excluding skis up to 220 cm (79 in) a heavy bag charge applies. The charge is waived up to 32 kg (70 lb) for customers travelling in Business Class and to Finnair Plus Platinum and oneworld Emerald members.

Heavy bag charge can be paid at the airport only.

Special baggage

In case sporting equipment is within the size and weight of a standard bag (including skis up to 220 cm (79 in)), it can be carried as part of the normal baggage allowance. In case special baggage exceeds the standard allowance or size, an extra bag charge or a heavy bag charge applies.
