Sapporo – Japan's winter wonderland

Japan

Created by Mondo for Finnair

Experience Japan's winter wonderland in Sapporo and enjoy skiing, hot springs and traditional Japanese culture, while not forgetting the tasty seafood and steaming bowls of miso ramen. In the spring, you can admire the enchanting splendour of the cherry blossoms, whilst in the summer, you can enjoy the lush parks in warm weather. Autumn makes Sapporo glow in the shimmering shades of orange, red and brown.

Sapporo, the largest city in Hokkaido Island, is a great destination for winter sports lovers – you can spend an active winter day at one of Sapporo's many ski resorts. Every year at the beginning of February, the city is celebrating a popular snow festival: Sapporo Snow Festival. Take in the atmosphere of a big winter party, admire the detailed ice sculptures and talented musicians. And, as said, the event is wildly popular – every February, the famous snow festival attracts over 2 million visitors to the city.

Onsen - Hot Springs

Both the soul and the body rest on the sweet warmth of an onsen (a Japanese hot spring). A relaxing and refreshing visit to onsens is an experience that you must include in your visit to Sapporo. For example, try Kohannoyado Shikotsuko Markoma Onsen Ryokan, where the serene lake view opens in front of your eyes. The mountains surrounding Sapporo are home to some of the best onsens in the world. On the other hand, Jozankei Onsen is an onsen village, located about an hour from Sapporo.

Head up the mountain: Mt. Moiwa offers spectacular night-time views over Sapporo.

Eat & Drink: A bowl of steaming ramen washed down with Sapporo beer

Sapporo is known as an oasis for gourmets, and the city's food lures include delicious ramen and Sapporo lager. In addition to that oldest beer brand of Japan, try the inventive creations of local small breweries, such as the smoky and chocolatey porters of a brewpub Moon Sun Brewing
