Riga – a holiday in an art exhibition the size of a city

The buildings in Riga are full of surprises. A mysterious carved head might be staring back at you from one edifice, while the next one is adorned by a beautiful peacock. A holiday in Riga is like walking through an art exhibition.
Riga is the most diverse of Baltic capital cities. In addition to the pretty mediaeval old town, the other characteristic of the city is the sumptuously decorated art nouveau houses. Riga is architecturally quite unique: Riga has more than 800 art nouveau buildings, which is more than in any other city. Riga’s main sights – the cathedral, old town and the Three Brothers – are also architectural.
Walking along Riga’s streets you will want to slow down just like when visiting an art exhibition. And if there is any danger of architecture overload, it is time to head towards the outskirts of the city centre, to the Miera iala street, which, thanks to its many coffee shops, galleries and boutiques, has become city’s hipster magnet. This is where Riga’s best and most interesting restaurants and hangouts are located.
