Helsinki – holiday in Finland’s quirky capital
Created by Mondo for Finnair
An impressive modern wood edifice stands on the waterfront. Wood, glass, sharp angles and rounded shapes. In any other capital, this building would most likely house a museum of contemporary art. But no, not in Helsinki. This is a public sauna! Half-naked bathers are sipping their drinks on the terrace of the sauna and jumping into the sea for a swim.
Sauna is an essential part of Finnish culture and Löyly is a perfect place for a visitor to try it, as in Löyly all bathers wear swimming costumes and the traditional, naked bathing is not done. So no need to get nervous!
The sauna is open round the year and a clear indication that Helsinki is not just any old European city. It’s trendy in its unique, edgy way. Helsinki does not have any in-your-face hipster districts, but instead high-quality fun cafés can be found all over the city. Helsinki is made for urban explorers.
Nature is never far away. In Helsinki you can always combine an urban city break with a seaside holiday on the beautiful islands, or a hiking holiday in a national park only a short drive from the capital.
