Chicago – a holiday in the city of skyscrapers

The blue skies and the skyscrapers are reflected on the vast steel sculpture, which resembles a mercury bubble. People are busying themselves around the sculpture taking pictures. Cloud Gate, a work by artist Anish Kapoor, was unveiled in 2006 and immediately became Chicago’s most iconic attraction. It is a tribute to Chicago’s amazing skyline – it is as if it sucks in the skyscrapers.
And Chicago really is a city of skyscrapers. The Home Insurance Building, which is considered the world’s first skyscraper, was completed in Chicago in 1885. The building had 10 floors. Today, Chicago has the second and third tallest buildings in the United States. Chicago’s famous shopping street, the Magnificent Mile, or North Michigan Avenue, runs through the field of skyscrapers.
Despite the metropolitan scenery of skyscrapers – or actually because of them – Chicago city centre is wonderfully compact. Nearly all of the city’s attractions, shopping districts and theatres are within walking distance of each other. Chicago is a great destination for a short holiday in a throbbing metropolis.
