Yangon – holiday in exotic Myanmar

Created by Mondo for Finnair

The gold-plated Shwedagon Pagoda shines in the sun so brightly that you have to squint your eyes. A group of Buddhist nuns dressed in pink walk around its massive tower. The grand pagoda is Yangon’s most spectacular attraction, but is also the main meeting place for locals. A tiny toddler is learning to walk in one of the side corridors of the temple. The parents watch their son take his first steps with smiles.

It is as if Yangon, Myanmar’s larger city, is also taking its first steps in the modern world after a long period of isolation. New restaurants and bars open in the old city centre, where the run-down colonial quarters retain their romantic air.

The exoticism of Yangon leaves nobody cold. Men dress in the traditional longyi wrapped around their waist and women have spirals on their face painted with paste from thanaka trees. Old grannies smoke thing cheroot cigars.

Yangon is a gateway to the wonderful world of Myanmar. Yangon makes a good base for trips to the temples of Bagan and Inle Lake, with the narrow foot-propelled boats of the locals.
