Tenerife – a holiday on the most scenic island in the Canaries

Spain

Created by Mondo for Finnair

Stepping onto a lookout takes your breath away. Besides the thin mountain air, the landscape will leave you breathless: lava fields, endless rock formations and rugged hills. In addition to year round beach holidays, Tenerife is also excellent for hiking in the midst of astounding scenery.

The dizzying landscape is dominated by Mount Teide, the tallest mountain in the Canary Islands—and the whole of Spain—which reaches 3,718 meters above sea level. Standing on its top it is easy to imagine yourself on another planet instead of Tenerife.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, so there are plenty of options for what to do. Sun worshippers will appreciate the infinite sandy beaches and wild water parks while nature travellers will find and endless number of experiences from inland Tenerife. The weather in Tenerife is mild throughout the year.

A wealth of suitable foot paths and mountain biking paths are available around the year. In addition to the volcanic scenery at Mount Teide, great hiking routes can also be found in the midst of the Canary Island pine trees in Bosque de la Esperanza. The neighbouring island La Gomera, which is only a short ferry trip away, offers an even greener scenery.

Good to know about Tenerife

Eat

The outdoor tables at La Caleta in a small fishing village of the same name have open views over the glistening Atlantic. The high point of the evening is watching the sun go down into the sea. The menu includes fresh fish and seafood from the sea, at a reasonable price. The main courses range between ten and twenty euros.

Try

Serious athletes will cycle up to Mount Teide. On the way up, brace yourself for a tough ascent. And make sure your brakes can take the trip back down the hill. The route takes you through vineyards and pine forests along a serpentine road. The last few metres to the top of Mount Teide are covered by a cable car, if the wind permits. Hike and enjoy, even if the cable car is closed. Don’t forget to bring your own lunch!

Shop

If the weather turns cool and cloudy, help is near. The United Colors of Benetton Outlet is located on the seaside promenade of Playa de las Americas. Look especially for basic Benetton sweaters for adults. A men’s merino wool jumper will set you back no more than ten euros.
