Siem Reap – trip to the ruins of Angkor

Created by Mondo for Finnair

You will never forget the moment when you see the temples of Angkor for the first time. A road runs through the jungle and leads to a wide moat, behind which rises the formidable Angkor Wat. The lotus towers of the temple rise to the heavens.

Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious monument, but their size is not the only reason for their greatness; the art of the complex is spellbinding. The walls are carved with amazing ornaments, illustrating the adventures of the gods, the battles of armies and life in the Khmer empire. The temple ornaments read like a good book.

Angkor Wat is the main attraction in the area, but Angkor includes several other magnificent temples. Bayon is architecturally the most fascinating: countless large Buddha statues watch over visitors as if in a house of mirrors. Ta Phrom has been evocatively left for the jungle to take over.

The base for visiting Angkor is Siem Reap. The little town is itself an interesting place to visit. Colonial buildings housing lovely boutiques and great restaurants make any visitor want to stay.
