Holiday in Shanghai – the two faces of the supercity

China

Created by Mondo for Finnair

Shiny skyscrapers and colonial architecture, huge shopping centres and tranquil parks – Shanghai leaves an impression with its many different sides. The high points of a holiday in Shanghai are the shopping and its reasonable prices, new culinary experiences and the futuristic cityscape.

Shanghai is China’s largest city. And China has the highest population in the world. The size of Shanghai really hits home when you see it with your own eyes from a height of nearly half a kilometre, from the observation deck on Shanghai World Financial Centre. Despite the vast size of the metropolis, the Shanghai city centre is surprisingly compact and easy to take in. Huangpu River splits the city centre into two parts, Puxi and Pudong.

Puxi is the historical district of Shanghai, and its riverside street, The Bund, is lined with buildings from the colonial period. Nearby runs the unbelievably busy Nanjing Road surrounded by shopping centres. On the opposite shore, the skyscrapers of Pudong almost touch the sky, including the futuristic Oriental Pearl TV & Radio Tower. Here in the heart of Shanghai, the past and the present meet.

Good to know about Shanghai

Eat

If you want to try the real Shanghai cuisine, head to Bao Luo restaurant. It is very popular with the locals, so be prepared to wait for your table. The prices are very affordable, so trying many different dishes won’t be a stretch.

Try

The Huangpu River running through Shanghai has busy traffic. River cruises are organised by several different companies, and the boat size and on-board entertainment vary widely. All the boats operate between Yangpu and Nanpu bridges. Watch the bustle on both sides of the river and the magnificent skyscraper skyline from the boat.

Shop

Fabrics, fruit, flowers, antique – all the different varieties of merchandise have their own market. If you are interested in pearls, go to the Hongqiao pearl market. There are numerous vendors selling both synthetic and real pearls. Ask the vendor to make a piece of jewellery to your personal specifications.
