Lisbon – a holiday in the city that discovered the world

A fishmonger is waving a huge fish in both hands: “Come and buy!” Guaranteed fresh!” Cats are leaping from one roof to the next, and a duck cackles loudly in front of a green grocer’s. White vests and knickers are drying on washing lines stretched between houses. A holiday in Lisbon, and a visit in the meandering streets of the old Moorish quarter Alfama, takes you to a different reality.
Alfama is one of Lisbon’s charming, authentic quarters. Another one is Bairro Alto, where tiny restaurants and bars fill with people at night, as they have done for centuries. An evening in the restaurants of the old quarters of Lisbon also offers an opportunity to listen to fado music in its original setting.
A contrast to the characterful quarters is Belém, a distinguished area with the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, which reminds visitors of the time when Portugal ruled the seas.
Lisbon is a fascinating city: an idyllic city that once was the centre of the whole world.
