Biarritz – surfing and luxurious beach holidays

Created by Mondo for Finnair

The rolling waves crash on the beautiful rock formations of the long beach of Biarritz. The red and white palatial Hôtel du Palais dominates the view. This is how it began: the rise of Biarritz to world fame. What now serves as a luxury hotel, was originally built in the 1850s as a villa for the Empress Eugénie of France.

She was Spanish by birth and Napoleon III wanted to alleviate his wife’s homesickness by giving her a villa in the Basque Country, close to her native Spain. By early 1900s, Biarritz had become one the Europe’s most exclusive beach holiday resorts, where the great and the good flocked to enjoy the casinos and the seaside.

Today, Biarritz is best known as one of the leading surfing holiday destinations in Europe. Even beginners can have a taste of surfing at one of the surfing schools in this attractive little city.

Don’t be afraid to give it a try! Who knows, you may spot Cameron Diaz riding the waves—the film star is known to have visited Biarritz on several occasions for a surfing holiday.
