Barcelona – a city break in the horn of plenty of Europe

The narrow alleys of Barri Gòtic are easy to get lost in. But does it really matter where you are going, if wherever you turn there is a cosy café or a grand Gothic church? It would be so easy to spend a whole day in the mediaeval centre of Barcelona, but there’s no time, there’s too much left to see in the city!

Barcelona is a perfect combination of a beach holiday and a city break. Busy market halls, trendy bars, restaurants and wide boulevards buzzing with life and the golden sands of La Barceloneta make an ideal destination for a long weekend—or even longer.

There are naturally Barcelona’s iconic sights—Antoni Gaudí’s buildings that defy the imagination. The most famous of his edifices is La Sagrada Família, which must be the most fantastical church in the world and which has been under construction for more than a century.

A different type of culture can be witnessed at Camp Nou, the home stadium of FC Barcelona, which also houses the museum of the famous football team. It can also be quite an experience to watch Barça’s matches at one of the bars frequented by the locals—for example, around the lively neighbourhood of El Raval.

Good to know about Barcelona

If you are looking for something new to taste, give Ultramarinos a try. It serves food made from the best Spanish ingredients with a modern twist: Iberico pork, lamb form Castilla y Leon, local cod with honey aioli ...They also whip up trendy cocktails at the bar.

Few people know that Barcelona is the capital of Catalan rumba. Its origins are in the city’s Romani community and it dates from the early 1950s. The La Rumbeta club is a place where you can listen to real rumba played live. While at it, sample some wine and tapas, or sign up for a singing course.

The go-to souvenir from Spain is of course shoes. If you are after something unusual, La Veintinueve sells shoes inspired by flamenco and pin-up styles. All shoes are handmade and come in vibrant colours. You won’t find these shoes on the high street!
