Transporting powder-like substances on flights to the United States

    27 June 2018

Because of new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements for flights to the United States, which will become effective 30 June 2018, Finnair requires customers to place powder-like substances over 12 oz. / 350 mL in their checked bags. Powders in carry-on bags may require secondary screening, and if the powder cannot be cleared by airline security personnel, they will be prohibited from the cabin of the aircraft.

To reduce the chance that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires the disposal of powder-like substances over 12 oz. / 350 mL at the gate, Finnair recommends that customers place these items in their checked bags.

This policy does not apply to flights departing from the United States and/or United States territories.

CONGESTION EXPECTED AT HELSINKI AIRPORT DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

During the holiday season, the number of customers at Helsinki Airport increases and congestion is expected from time to time. Below you’ll find some tips on how to make your travel smoother.

    Before travel:

    • You can do the check-in in advance to avoid queues at the airport. Advance check-in starts 36 hours before the flight departure either online on finnair.com or with Finnair App. You can download Finnair App (iOS or Android) here.
    • If you are travelling with extra baggage, you can pay the extra fee via Manage booking on finnair.com the previous day.
    • You can also bring your baggage to the airport already in the previous evening. Baggage can be dropped off between 6 pm and 9.30 pm. One family member may hand in the baggage for the whole family, provided that he or she can show all tickets and travel documents.

    On the day of departure:

    • Please allow extra time when arriving to the airport, because there may be queues for the bag drop and the security check.

    Allowed baggage

The baggage allowance is marked on your ticket, e.g. 1 PC means that you are allowed to check in one bag max. 23 kg free of charge. A snowboard bag or a ski bag up to 23 kg and 220 cm is considered one piece of baggage. The fee for carrying sports equipment depends on the baggage allowance of your ticket as well as how much other baggage you’re taking with you. Read more about travelling with sports equipment here.

With our baggage allowance calculator it’s quick and easy to find out how much baggage you can take on your flight and calculate extra baggage fees in advance.

Please check also your carry-on baggage allowance. Due to the limited space on board, it’s important that your carry-on baggage is within the size and weight limits.

If you have any questions, we are happy to help you via Twitter @FinnairHelps, through our Facebook pages and via chat on finnair.com.

    Happy Holidays!

Yesterday's weather continues to affect Finnair’s traffic in the coming days

    13 December 2017

The storm in Central Europe and the runway restrictions caused by heavy snowfall in Helsinki Airport on Tuesday congested Finnair operations at Helsinki Airport severely on Tuesday evening. An overtime working ban by Finnish aviation union also contributed partly to the situation. Finnair had to cancel over 60 flights, and many flights were delayed.

Disruptions expected in the coming days

During the night Finnair planned how to recover its operations as soon as possible. The recovery to normal traffic and rerouting of all customers will however take time. According to the current estimate, delays are expected in domestic and European traffic today on Wednesday and complete recovery traffic is expected on Thursday. Long haul traffic is expected to recover for most part on Thursday.

We communicate about possible cancellations and delays directly to the customers by text messages. Please check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.

We serve customers by phone, chat and on Twitter @FinnairHelps. Please note that our customer service is very congested. In case your issue is not urgent, we kindly recommend you contact us later this week.

    Finnair press release

Heavy snowfall causes delays in flights and other operations during the evening of 12 December

    12 December 2017

Heavy snowfall at Helsinki is affecting Finnair and other airlines’ operations on the evening of 12 December.

We ask customers to prepare for long delays in flight departures. Also, the flights returning to Helsinki from European cities will arrive with delays during the night, and due to limited resources available for unloading the aircraft at night time, it unfortunately may take a long time for the passengers to get to leave the aircraft. We also expect there to be delays in baggage delivery, and Finnair will deliver any luggage left behind to the customers later on.

We communicate possible flight cancellations directly to customers with text messages, provided that the reservation includes a mobile number. Our customer service is unfortunately congested and we ask for customers’ patience.

We apologize for all the inconvenience this is causing to our customers, and ask for their patience and understanding in this difficult situation. Finnair staff together with our partners are doing their best to get customers to their destinations, but it is likely that the delays of today’s traffic will be reflected in some delays also on Wednesday 13 December.

FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS AND DELAYS DUE TO IAU AIRPORT STRIKE ON FRIDAY MARCH 17

    15 March 2017

Strike and support actions are planned for Friday, March 17 from 3 pm – 7 pm EET at Helsinki Airport, related to the dispute between the Finnish Aviation Union and the service sector employer union Palta about labour agreements in Airpro Oy. The strike will considerably impact Finnair’s flights on Friday, as during the strike, critical ground services are not available or are very limited. Finnair is not a party to the labour dispute.

Flight cancellations and other changes are updated on this page. We also communicate directly with text messages and email to customers whose flights are impacted. We ask you to kindly check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information, so that the messages can reach you.

Customers, who have a reservation for a Finnair flight on Friday March 17 or to one of the other possible strike days (22 March, 23 March and 24 March), can change their travel date until April 9 to avoid travelling on the dates when the strike can affect Finnair’s flights.

If your flight IS on the list of cancelled flights:

    1) Check from Manage booking on finnair.com if we have already found an alternative flight for you. Check also that your contact details are up to date.
    2) If you accept the new routing, please check-in and arrive at the airport according to the new booking.
    3) If the alternative flight doesn’t suit your plans, please contact Finnair customer service.
    4) If an alternative flight isn’t yet shown in Manage booking, please be patient – finding alternative flights for thousands of customers will take some time.
    5) You can also change your travel date until April 9
    6) If we cannot find an alternative flight for you, you can change the travel date or apply for refund to the ticket

If you have bought your ticket directly from Finnair, you can apply for a refund of a cancelled flight and bought ancillary services here.

If your flight is on March 17 and your flight IS NOT on the list of cancelled flights:

    1) Check that your contact details are up to date in ” Manage booking” on finnair.com, so that you will receive possible messages about delays or an earlier departure time.
    2) Reserve enough time as Helsinki Airport is most likely congested.
    3) Check-in online prior to arriving at the airport.
    4) If possible, travel with hand luggage only, as baggage handling will be disturbed. Please follow the normal rules regarding hand luggage size and weight.

Finnair extends the lease of an Airbus 330 from Iberia for its Miami route

    5 January 2017

Due to operative reasons Finnair uses leased aircraft and crew from Spanish airline Iberia on the Helsinki – Miami route from 10 January to 1 May 2017. The flight schedule remains the same, and this does not require any action from the customers. We have a good experience of the co-operation with Iberia from 2014 when the company operated some of our flights to/from New York.

The aircraft is a three years old A330-300. The English speaking crew comes from Iberia, and two Finnair cabin crew members join the crew to support the customer service. As of 1 February, the cockpit crew comes from Iberia and the cabin crew comes from Finnair. The meal concept on board is the Finnair meal concept. There is a personal entertainment system and Iberia's chargeable internet connection both in Economy and Business class. Business class has full flat seats.

When you buy tickets through finnair.com, the operating airline is shown on the ‘Select Flights’ page. If you have already made a booking on any of the flights affected, we will inform you about the change in operating aircraft by pre-departure email 30, 15 and 1 day before your flight. Please check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.

Due to the change in flight operator:

    * You can be rerouted on other oneworld carriers according to seat availability.

    * You are entitled to a ticket refund if you choose not to travel.

    Checklist for Christmas travelers

    19 December 2016

Holiday season increases the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport. Passengers are advised to check-in and pay for possible extra bag fees on our website the previous day.

Please arrive to the airport well before your flight as there may be queues for the bag drop and the security check. You can also bring your baggage to the airport already on the previous evening. Baggage can be dropped off between 18:00 and 21:30 (except 24 December). One family member may hand in the baggage for the whole family, provided that he or she can show all tickets and travel documents.

    Baggage

The baggage allowance is marked on your ticket: e.g. 1 PC means that you are allowed to check in one bag max. 23 kg or a snowboard bag/ski bag up to 23 kg and 220 cm free of charge. Read more about travelling with sports equipment here.

With our Baggage Allowance Calculator it’s quick and easy to find out how much baggage you can take on your flight and calculate extra baggage fees in advance. If you pay for extra baggage via Manage booking, it’ll cost you less than if you pay at the airport.

Please check also your carry-on baggage allowance. Due to the limited space on board it’s important that your carry-on baggage is within the size and weight limits. Read more.

    Restricted items

Please note that for safety and security reasons, certain items are not allowed on board as carry-on baggage, and some items are not permitted aboard the aircraft even as checked baggage. E.g. all lithium batteries are restricted dangerous goods. Read more.

    Advance check-in

Check-in may be completed 36 hours before flight departure either online or with our mobile application. Download Finnair app (iOS or Android).

Small vehicles powered by lithium batteries forbidden

    15 December 2015

Finnair and many other airlines are restricting the carriage of vehicles powered by lithium batteries. Starting 16 December 2015, customers on Finnair flights are due to security reasons not allowed to transport electrically powered vehicles running on lithium ion batteries (e.g. Hoverboard, mini - Segway, AirWheel, Solowheel) as checked baggage or carry-on baggage. The large lithium batteries used in these vehicles are associated with potential fire risks.

If the customer brings an electrically powered vehicle to the airport, it is his/her responsibility to arrange disposal of the item prior to boarding. Due to the fire risk Finnair cannot store it.

The above restrictions also apply to interline transit passengers with connection to Finnair flights.

ATR from DOT may be used on Finnair's domestic and European routes for a limited time period

Finnair has leased an ATR aircraft and crew from DOT, a subsidiary of Danish Air Transport , for a limited time period starting of Oct 10, to cover for the shortage of pilots at Norra, which operates a part of Finnair's traffic in Finland and in Europe.
