All of us have seen pictures of tourists “holding up” Pisa’s famous Leaning Tower, the Torre Pendente. This bell tower built on soggy marshland has been leaning since its construction in the 12th century. There is much more to see and do in Pisa and its surroundings than just holding up a leaning bell tower, though. The Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on which the famous tower rests, is also the home of the beautiful cathedral, the Duomo di Pisa, as well as the Battistero, or Baptistry, and museums full of Italian sculptures and art.
Outside of the tourist area, Pisa is a quaint city full of palaces, churches and museums. On the more modern front, it can be said to be a city dominated by students with the University of Pisa enrolling around 52,000 students. Cafes and restaurants can be found on every corner with happy hour treats drawing in customers in the evenings.
Pisa is known for more than its Leaning Tower and University, however. On the last Sunday of June you can witness a special medieval battle in full costumes called the Gioco del Ponte (Game of the Bridge) that takes place on the Ponte Mezzo Bridge. It is a game based on Pisa’s folklore and is essentially a battle between the different neighbourhoods of Pisa. Pisa is also a great starting point for making short trips to other unique cities in Tuscany. The captivating medieval town of Siena is close by, and the art central of Italy, Florence, can even be reached by a bicycle tour that takes you around the beautiful Tuscan countryside.
The airport is located 4 km south of Pisa.
Finnair flies to Pisa from 22 June until 14 August 2015.
