Getting around

TokiTokyo is filled with people, cars, and luckily, trains. Moving millions of people daily is best done on rails. Short distances are worth walking, as walking on the streets of Tokyo is an unforgettable experience.

The traffic jams in Tokyo, the biggest metropolitan area in the world, are considered the worst in the world. This is why a train or a subway is the best choice when traveling long distances.

Hau kan ai herp juu?

As the city railway network is extensive, the subway or the local train is usually the best way to move around. If you find the subway map – which looks like a bowl of noodles – confusing, ask for help from the friendly station staff.

By bus or taxi

Only use the bus if the train or subway is not an option. Taxis are easy to hail. The best way to get a taxi is to walk to the bigger streets.

The bullet trains are the best way to travel between big cities and other transport hubs. With speeds of over 300 kilometers per hour, even long distances are covered in no time at all.

The Japan Rail Pass is worth it

The journey from Tokyo to Nagoya is 1.5 hours, and Kyoto and Osaka are less than 3 hours away. Travelling is cheap, if you buy the Japan Rail Pass before arriving in the country. The pass allows you to use the bullet trains freely for one week. Please note that you can only purchase the Japan Rail Pass outside of Japan.

Reserve a seat beforehand

If possible, get a seat ticket for the train. You can only reserve a seat at the train station, although this can be done a few days in advance. If you do not reserve a seat, the last carriages are always reserved for passengers without seat tickets.
