Congestion expected at Helsinki Airport during the holiday season
December 2018
During the holiday season, the number of customers at Helsinki Airport increases and congestion is expected from time to time. Below you’ll find some tips on how to make your travel smoother.
Before travel:
- You can do the check-in in advance to avoid queues at the airport. Advance check-in starts 36 hours before the flight departure either online on finnair.com or with Finnair App. You can download Finnair App (iOS or Android) here.
- If you are travelling with extra baggage, you can pay the extra fee via Manage booking on finnair.com the previous day.
- You can also bring your baggage to the airport already in the previous evening. Baggage can be dropped off between 6 pm and 9.30 pm. One family member may hand in the baggage for the whole family if he or she can show all tickets and travel documents.
On the day of departure:
- Please allow extra time when arriving at the airport, because there may be queues for the bag drop and the security check.
Allowed baggage
The baggage allowance is marked on your ticket, e.g. 1 PC means that you can check in one bag max. 23 kg free of charge. A snowboard bag or a ski bag up to 23 kg and 220 cm is considered one piece of baggage. The fee for carrying sports equipment depends on the baggage allowance of your ticket as well as how much other baggage you’re taking with you. Read more about travelling with sports equipment here.
Please check also your carry-on baggage allowance. Due to the limited space onboard, it’s important that your carry-on baggage is within the size and weight limits.
If you have any questions, we are happy to help you via Twitter @FinnairHelps, through our Facebook pages and via chat on finnair.com.
Happy Holidays!

Checklist for Christmas travelers
19 December 2017
Holiday season increases the number of passengers at Helsinki Airport. We advise you to check-in and pay for possible extra bag fees on our website the previous day.
Please arrive to the airport well before your flight as there may be queues for the bag drop and the security check. You can also bring your baggage to Helsinki Airport already on the previous evening. Baggage can be dropped off between 18:00 and 21:30. One family member may hand in the baggage for the whole family if he or she has all tickets and travel documents.
Baggage
The baggage allowance is marked on your ticket: e.g. 1 PC means that you can check in one bag max. 23 kg or a snowboard bag/ski bag up to 23 kg and 220 cm free of charge. Read more about travelling with sports equipment here.
If you pay for extra baggage via Manage booking, it’ll cost you less than if you pay at the airport.
Please check also your carry-on baggage allowance. Due to the limited space onboard it’s important that your carry-on baggage is within the size and weight limits. Read more.
Restricted items
Please note that for safety and security reasons, certain items are not allowed on board as carry-on baggage, and some items are not permitted aboard the aircraft even as checked baggage. E.g. all lithium batteries are restricted dangerous goods. Read more.

Yesterday's weather continues to affect Finnair’s traffic in the coming days
13 December 2017
The storm in Central Europe and the runway restrictions caused by heavy snowfall in Helsinki Airport on Tuesday congested Finnair operations at Helsinki Airport severely on Tuesday evening. An overtime working ban by Finnish aviation union also contributed partly to the situation. Finnair had to cancel over 60 flights, and many flights were delayed.
Disruptions expected in the coming days
During the night Finnair planned how to recover its operations as soon as possible. The recovery to normal traffic and rerouting of all customers will however take time. According to the current estimate, delays are expected in domestic and European traffic today on Wednesday and complete recovery traffic is expected on Thursday. Long haul traffic is expected to recover for most part on Thursday.
We communicate about possible cancellations and delays directly to the customers by text messages. Please check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.
We serve customers by phone, chat and on Twitter @FinnairHelps. Please note that our customer service is very congested. In case your issue is not urgent, we kindly recommend you contact us later this week.

Heavy snowfall causes delays in flights and other operations during the evening of 12 December
12 December 2017
Heavy snowfall at Helsinki is affecting Finnair and other airlines’ operations on the evening of 12 December. We ask customers to prepare for long delays in flight departures. Also, the flights returning to Helsinki from European cities will arrive with delays during the night, and due to limited resources available for unloading the aircraft at night time, it, unfortunately, may take a long time for the passengers to get to leave the aircraft. We also expect there to be delays in baggage delivery, and Finnair will deliver any luggage left behind to the customers later on.
We communicate possible flight cancellations directly to customers with text messages, provided that the reservation includes a mobile number. Our customer service is unfortunately congested, and we ask for customers’ patience.
We apologize for all the inconvenience this is causing to our customers and ask for their patience and understanding in this difficult situation. Finnair staff together with our partners are doing their best to get customers to their destinations, but it is likely that the delays of today’s traffic will be reflected in some delays also on Wednesday 13 December.

Customers whose flights won’t be operated due to the strike or support strike can either
- seek ticket refund
- change their travel date until March 20 without extra charges, according to seat availability
We're sorry for the inconvenience the cancellation causes you!
Customers travelling on Monday, March 6 should prepare for flight delays during the whole day.
Finnair’s onboard meal and drink service will also be limited due to the strike. Only water can be served on domestic and European flights. The delivery of pre-order meals and other products will also be significantly restricted.
Finnair recommends customers to travel only with hand luggage whenever possible, as also baggage handling will be disturbed. Normal weight and size limitations of hand luggage must be followed.
Longer waiting times are expected in Finnair’s customer service, and we ask for customers’ patience. Customers can contact Finnair via the Chat service on Finnair’s internet pages, by phone or in social media by sending a message to @finnairhelps on Twitter or a private message on Finnair’s Facebook pages.
More information about the strike and support actions can be found on Finavia’s internet pages at www.finavia.fi.
Possible air traffic strikes may cause congestion at Helsinki Airport
2 March 2017
The Finnish Aviation Labour Union (IAU) has issued strike notices concerning the ground handling operations and security control services for the following time periods: 03.3.2017 at 14 - 19 pm, 06.3.2017 at 03 - 09 am, 10.3.2017 at 15 - 19 pm and 14.3.2017 at 03 - 09 am.

We are monitoring the situation and any changes will be updated on this page.
An executive order on entry restrictions to the US has been suspended
4 February 2017
Finnair has received confirmation from US Customs and Border Protection that the Executive Order issued from the White House on entry restrictions of nationalities of 7 countries has been suspended. The suspension will be in effect until the legality of the EO has been decided in court.
This means that nationals of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen holding valid US visas will, with immediate effect, be allowed to enter the US.
We are monitoring the situation and any changes or new instructions from the US authorities will be updated on this page.
Finnair extends the lease of an Airbus 330 from Iberia for its Miami route
5 January 2017
Due to operative reasons Finnair uses leased aircraft and crew from Spanish airline Iberia on the Helsinki – Miami route from 10 January to 1 May 2017. The flight schedule remains the same, and this does not require any action from the customers. We have a good experience of the co-operation with Iberia from 2014 when the company operated some of our flights to/from New York.
The aircraft is a three years old A330-300. The English-speaking crew comes from Iberia, and two Finnair cabin crew members join the crew to support the customer service. As of 1 February, the cockpit crew comes from Iberia and the cabin crew comes from Finnair. The meal concept onboard is the Finnair meal concept. There are a personal entertainment system and Iberia's chargeable internet connection both in Economy and Business class. Business class has full-flat seats.
When you buy tickets through finnair.com, the operating airline is shown on the ‘Select Flights’ page. If you have already made a booking on any of the flights affected, we will inform you about the change in operating aircraft by pre-departure email 30, 15 and 1 day before your flight. Please check from Manage booking that we have your current contact information.
Due to the change in flight operator:
- You can be rerouted on other oneworld carriers according to seat availability.
- You are entitled to a ticket refund if you choose not to travel.
- You can change your trip free of charge for dates between 2 May and 31 May 2017 according to seat availability.
If you wish to change or cancel your flight, kindly contact Finnair Customer Service. We also serve our customers on Twitter @FinnairHelps and on Finnair Facebook pages. If you have purchased your ticket from another airline or from a travel agent, please contact them directly.
Unfortunately, there are no Economy Comfort seats in the aircraft. If you have purchased an Economy Comfort seat, we will re-seat you to a seat with more leg space. If no such seats are available, we will refund the amount paid to your credit card. This does not require any action from you. If you have purchased any other seat, you will automatically be re-seated to a similar seat.
We are sorry for the inconvenience the change in flight operator may cause you.
Possible flight cancellations due to working restrictions set by pilots’ union
1 January 2017
Finnair is preparing for possible flight cancellations due to working restrictions set by the Finnish Pilots’ Association. Finnair has been forced to cancel several flights and may need to cancel some more flights within next days for example if a pilot becomes ill and there aren’t enough standby and management pilots to fill the position. Collective labour agreement negotiations are ongoing between Finnair and the pilot union to reach a solution.
We inform customers of flight cancellations and delays directly via text messages. Please check that we have your correct contact information at Manage booking so that our text message reaches you well. You can also check up to date flight information on this page.
If your flight is cancelled, you can:
- postpone the trip free of charge between 1 January and 31 March 2017 according to seat availability.
- fill in a refund application in order to get a refund of the ticket fare.
We will also try to look for an alternative flight that enables you to continue your trip as smooth as possible.
We are following the situation closely and will update any new information on this page, Facebook and Twitter.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience the situation causes to our customers.
