Jet lag
West-bound travel is easier on the body in terms of adapting to the new time zone than east-bound travel. The body is able to "adjust" its internal clock by approximately two hours in a 24-hour period.
Tips for alleviating jet lag
- You can reduce jet lag starting before the flight by going to sleep and waking up later than usual, when travelling west-bound and by going to sleep and waking up earlier, when travelling east-bound.
- Start following the local time at your destination immediately upon arrival. When arriving at your destination in the morning, local time, you may take a short nap during the day.
- Sleep-inducing medication during the flight is not recommended for safety reasons. The effectiveness of such medication in terms of alleviating jet lag has also not been proven. Quite to the contrary, they may slow the adaptation to the new time zone.
