Crew

The primary task of the cabin crew is to ensure the passengers safety throughout the flight. To perform this task they receive basic training and continuous, additional training. The cabin crew have good language skills, first aid skills and extensive service training, in addition to good knowledge of the meal and beverage selection and items available for purchase during the flight.

  • The size of the crew varies depending on the aircraft type, number of passengers and destination. On Asian routes the crew also includes local personnel.
  • On intercontinental flights the crew always has a Purser, who is the cabin supervisor.
  • In the Business Class section of wide-bodied aircraft, the flight attendants and stewards serving the passengers have received additional training to provide a more personalised service, including a more versatile meal and beverage service.
  • The aircraft is flown by the captain and the first officer, who are located in the cockpit. The captain is always in command of the whole flight.

The Finnair uniform

The new uniform worn by the Finnair crew was introduced on March 31,2002 and is designed by Anna-Kaisa Huttunen, a Finnish designer, living in Paris. The uniform consists of several different items that the crew can combine according to the season, work duties and their own preferences.

The uniform is an integral part of Finnair's image; the outfit represents a streamlined look and fits the coordinated style of the company. The key words in the design of the uniform were Finnishness and freshness; the uniform also communicates quality and timeless style. A Finnish company, Image Wear Oy, handles the manufacture and delivery of the uniforms.

The French travel magazine Bon Voyage listed the 20 most stylish flight attendant uniforms, in its November-December 2004 issue. The Finnair uniform ranked fifth on the list and was the only Western airline uniform in the top ten. The magazine commented that the stylish deep blue uniforms highlight the blond hair and fair complexion of Finnair flight attendants.

The new overcoats designed by Tiina Arras were introduced in December 2004. The design objective was to create stylish, functional and safe coats, for the spring, autumn and winter.

Approximately 3,500 Finnair employees wear the uniform. 2,700 of them work in aircraft cabins and cockpits and the rest are employed at airports and ticket offices in different parts of the world.
