Travelling is for life

A few words of advice might be useful and reassuring for those who are less seasoned travellers or for people who are travelling on an aircraft for the first time.

On this page:

Reserving special services

Before the flight

  • On Finnair's scheduled international flights, it is often possible to reserve a particular, preferred seat when booking the flight. On Leisure flights, seats are allocated in advance.
  • When booking the flight, we recommend that you mention any health-related matters, such as food allergies, illnesses and special diets prescribed by a doctor.
  • Special meals can be ordered for Finnair's scheduled flights up to 24 hours before departure, but on Leisure flights, 72 hours before departure, at the latest.
  • When you book your flight, we recommend that you mention if you need help moving around the departure or arrival airport, boarding the aircraft or transferring to a connecting flight, so that factors affecting seat selection can be included in the information concerning your reservation.
Persons with reduced mobility, pregnant women and children are not allowed to be seated at emergency exits, because in an emergency, these exits may have to be taken into use quickly.
  • Before you travel, it is always a good idea to check that your passport, other travel documents and necessary vaccinations are valid and that you have a sufficient supply of any medicines for the duration of your trip.
  • Medicines, prescriptions, eyeglasses, flight tickets, passports, money, credit cards, maps, addresses and telephone numbers, together with comfortable socks, should be included in your carry-on baggage.
  • For the flight, it is a good idea to wear comfortable clothing that does not constrict any part of the body.
A person assisting a passenger with reduced mobility receives a discount on his/her airfare on domestic flights. The escort may reserve a round trip ticket on the same flights as the person he/she is assisting, return on the next available flight or purchase a one-way ticket.

At the airport

  • For your own comfort, we recommend that you arrive at the airport in good time.
  • If you are travelling with a lot of baggage, you can check in at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in advance - for morning flights, however, not sooner than the night before departure.
  • Moving around the airport can be facilitated by ordering a wheelchair in advance for your use. At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, wheel walkers and electric vehicles are also available to convey passengers to the departure gates.
  • We recommend that you arrive at the departure gate in good time. At Helsinki-Vantaa, the person seeing the passenger off may accompany him or her all the way to the departure gate by obtaining permission to do so at the check-in.
  • At Helsinki-Vantaa, there are movable induction loops to reduce background noise and ease communication for persons with hearing aids. Movable induction loops are available in every departure hall and at transfer desks; immovable induction loops are available at each information desk.

  • All Finnair aircraft carry a first-aid kit that contains, for example, pain killers, nasal drops, diarrhoea medicine, bandages, splints and plasters.
  • In addition, aircraft carry a medical kit that can only be used by a doctor. This kit contains, for example, a blood-pressure monitor, a stethoscope and medicines needed for first aid.
