Checked baggage

Checked baggage is left at the check-in desk to be carried by the airline. The passenger's identity is checked at the check-in desk and at the gate - on both domestic and international flights.

Note before the flight

  • The maximum weight of a single bag on a Finnair flight is 32 kg or 70 lbs. even if it is shared, for example, by two persons. Exceptions are made only in the case of special items, such as sporting equipment, musical instruments, pets and wheelchairs, which have to be declared when making flight reservations through a travel agency or Finnair Customer Care Center. Reservations for special baggage such as instruments, pets and wheelchair, cannot be made on the Internet. Check the weight limits on specific routes.
  • Do not pack in your baggage any items or packages received from someone else, if you don't know the contents of such items or packages.
  • Make sure your baggage stays properly closed, fixed with a strap.
  • Attach a name tag on both the inside and the outside of each bag with your name and the full address of hotel or other accommodation at your destination. For the return journey, write your name and home address on the name tags.
  • Remove all old tags and labels form your baggage, as they may cause your baggage to be delayed.

Baggage transported in the hold

The main function of a bag is to protect its contents against damage. Baggage processing at the airport is done quickly and mechanically, which causes normal wear and tear. Finnair is not responsible for minor damage to checked baggage, unless the damage renders the baggage unusable. International regulations limit the liability of airlines for damage to checked baggage; therefore, it is in your interest to insure your baggage for its full value.

The baggage you have checked in to your final destination will be transferred automatically from one Finnair flight to another and from a Finnair flight to a flight operated by another oneworld airline, and vice versa. If your connecting flight is on the same ticket, your baggage is automatically transferred to flights operated by other airlines as well, unless rules by the authorities, such as customs regulations, prevent this. For responsibility reasons, baggage on a separate ticket is transferred to the connecting flight only when the airlines have so separately agreed. Baggage is carried on the same flight as the passenger.
