General information about check-in

Check-in times

For the check-in times of Finnair flights, please see destination information. For flights operated by Finnair’s partner airlines and other airlines, the check-in times of the airline in question apply. Please reserve enough time for check-in, baggage drop, security control and boarding.

Check-in without baggage

If you only have carry-on baggage, you can also check in at the departure gate at airports in Finland, at a ticket office in Finland, or at the Transfer Service desk in the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport gate area.

Baggage and connecting flights

The baggage you have checked in to your final destination will be transferred automatically from one Finnair flight to another and from a Finnair flight to a flight operated by another oneworld airline, and vice versa. If your connecting flight is on the same ticket, your baggage is automatically transferred to flights operated by other airlines as well, unless rules by the authorities, such as customs regulations, prevent this. For responsibility reasons, baggage on a separate ticket is transferred to the connecting flight only when the airlines have so separately agreed.

Documents required at the airport

At the Finnair service desks in the airport, you will need a passport or other valid travel document required for travel to your destination in addition to your e-ticket. On intercontinental flights you need to have your e-ticket itinerary/receipt with you; on other flights it is good to have it along, but not compulsory.

After check-in you will need at least one of the following at official service points at the airport: a text message check-in confirmation, a boarding pass printed from the check-in service or received from the check-in desk, or an e-ticket travel itinerary/receipt.

Seats

You can choose your seat for international scheduled Finnair flights when you book your flight, but you can also do this when checking in online or at a self-service check-in kiosk. Pre-booked seats may have to be changed due to a change of aircraft type or version. Your seat is confirmed at check-in. On flights within Finland, you can choose your seat freely when you board the aircraft.

Special desk for families with children and for other passengers needing assistance

A special service desk is available at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport for families with children and other special passengers, who are checking in in the check-in area 201–232. Check-in desk number 216 is marked with the text Special Passengers and corresponding symbols. This desk may also be used by children travelling as unaccompanied minors and by others needing special assistance, such as customers using wheelchairs.
