Welcome to Finnair’s emissions calculator!
As part of our effort to promote transparency and comparability in calculating air transport emissions, we have developed an advanced calculator based on actual cargo, passenger and fuel consumption data, not on averages or assumptions. The data is updated on a quarterly basis.
Our emissions per revenue kilometre have declined each year due to operational improvements, technological advancement and careful route and fleet planning. Over the long term, Finnair has ambitious but realistic goals to further reduce its emissions. We estimate that by constantly renewing our fleet and especially by introducing the next-generation Airbus A350 XWB aircraft, we will be able to decrease our total emissions by 20% from the year 2009 until 2017. Comparison of routes
How we calculate
The calculator allows you to search for a selection of Finnair routes. Information is not available for all routes that can be booked on our website.
The calculations are based on the actual cargo, passenger and fuel consumption data for Finnair’s air transportation in the previous financial year. The data is updated four times a year. The fuel consumed is calculated for each flight in relation to the weight of the cargo and passengers; in the calculator the fuel allocated to the passengers’ share is shown. In the calculations, all of the aircraft types flown by Finnair on the route are included.
Calculating the effect of emissions other than carbon dioxide for different routes is complicated, and we are constantly reviewing new data in this area. We report only the emissions (CO2) that we can accurately verify. We hope that research will continue in this area and that attention will be paid to different emissions, so that ways will be found to reduce emissions.

The warming effect on the environment of air transport is larger than just the carbon dioxide effect. This total effect can be estimated with various factors and indexes, for example the Radiative Forcing Index (RFI). Different emissions remain in the atmosphere for varying lengths of time; for this reason it is difficult to calculate a simple radiative forcing number. The current estimates vary in the range 1.1–4.7. In recent research, an index under 2.0 has usually been used.
Pax = All passengers who have claimed a ticket for the flight*

Distance = Gckm (Great Circle distance) * Distance multiplier (1.05) + Distance constant (20 km)**
Fuel consumption per pax = (Fuel consumption / (Pax KG + Cargo KG)) * 100*Passengers who have claimed a ticket for the flight include both the passengers who have the right to reserve a seat (customers who have paid for and claimed a ticket) and those who do not (for example infants and off-duty crew members). **Because routes are never exactly like this, we have used the multiplier 1.05, which shows the difference between the route distance and the Great Circle distance (the range is 1.02–1.12, depending on the route). In addition, for approach and departure patterns, a distance constant of 20 km has been added.
Fuel consumption per pax per 100 km = (fuelconsum_pax / Distance) * 100
CO2 per pax = Fuel consumption per pax * 3.15
CO2 per pax g/km = (CO2 per pax * 1,000) / Distance
