Extra baggage fees

If your amount of carry-on baggage exceeds the carry-on baggage allowance of your ticket, you need to pay for the extra baggage. You can purchase an extra carry-on bag only when your ticket type is Economy Superlight that does not include the carry-on bag.

You can purchase an extra carry-on bag at the time of booking or later via Manage booking.

If your itinerary includes flights operated by several airlines, you can purchase a carry-on bag for the Finnair-operated part of the journey in advance via our customer service.

If you bring a carry-on bag to the boarding gate that you have not purchased or that is not included in your booking, or if your carry-on bag exceeds the maximum size/weight limitations, you will be charged a €60 fee to place this bag in the aircraft hold.

If your itinerary includes flights operated by another airline, please check the operating company’s carry-on baggage allowance.

When all the flights in one direction of your itinerary are operated by Finnair, you can save time and money with prepaid extra baggage for that journey. You can purchase up to eight pieces of prepaid baggage at the time of booking or through Manage booking after your reservation has been confirmed. The maximum amount of baggage is 10 pieces. 

The prepaid charges also apply to skis, golf bags and surfboards when you purchase the transportation for them online at the time of booking or through Manage booking. Read more about transporting sports equipment.

If you travel with a Business Classic or Business Flex ticket type on Finnair long-haul flights, you can buy regular extra checked baggage (23 kg/50 lb) in advance, but can take up to 32 kg/70 lb per bag – the same weight as the two bags included in your allowance. We will skip the heavy bag charge at the airport.

If you’ve bought your flights or holiday package from a tour operator, you can pay for extra bags in Manage booking.

Please note that if you did not purchase your ticket directly with Finnair and the journey includes flights to/from North America, you may not be able to pay for your baggage online.

Extra bags can be purchased until 50, 65 or 80 minutes prior to departure. Please see the table below.

If your itinerary includes flights operated by another airline, please pay for your extra baggage at the airport. The price of your extra baggage is determined by the operating carrier.

The tables below contain the charges for Finnair flights for checked bags up to 23 kg. If your ticket includes flights from other airlines, IATA standards of the Most Significant Marketing Carrier (MSMC) define which airline’s baggage regulations apply to those flights. Excess baggage fees are defined by the airline that is carrying out the check-in. If possible, the extra bag charges are calculated according to the Most Significant Marketing Carrier’s extra bag charges.

A heavy or oversized bag charge applies if you are travelling with a bag that weighs 23–32 kg (50–70 lb) or exceeds the standard size of 90 cm x 75 cm x 45 cm (35 in x 30 in x 18 in). The maximum allowed dimensions are 190 cm x 75 cm x 65 cm (75 in x 29.5 in x 25.5 in).

If you travel with a Business Classic or Business Flex ticket type on Finnair long-haul flights, you can buy regular extra checked baggage (23 kg/50 lb) in advance, but can take up to 32 kg/70 lb per bag – the same weight as the two bags included in your allowance. Prepaid heavy bag up to 32 kg

An additional heavy bag of up to 32 kg can be bought in advance while making the booking or later in Manage booking.

If you are travelling with an additional bag that is both heavy and oversized, you can purchase it via our customer service. Otherwise, the heavy and/or oversized bag charge can only be paid at the airport.

Please note that when paid at the airport, the heavy or oversized bag charge is added on top of the standard extra bag fee if the number of bags included in the ticket is exceeded. The charges are for journeys in one direction.

Fees are in euros or the equivalent local currency. For departures from Canada, the applicable fees are collected in Canadian dollars; from USA, Vietnam or Israel in US dollars. When departing from India, local taxes are added to the fee.

If special baggage, such as sports equipment, is within the size and weight of a standard bag, it can be carried as part of your normal baggage allowance. If special baggage exceeds the standard allowance or size, an extra bag charge and/or a heavy bag charge applies.

Sports equipment

Please note that the following items are counted as special baggage items that always have an extra transportation charge.

The charge needs to be paid in advance. You can take your bicycle with you as checked baggage and pay the extra baggage fee while booking your flights. If you already have a booking and decide to take your bicycle with you, you can pay the fee via our self-service tool Manage booking.

Skiing and golf equipment are always considered special baggage and are not included in the normal baggage allowance. Their pricing is the same as for normal extra checked baggage. You can check the prices in the Checked baggage fees section above.

Transportation charges for sports equipment

Firearms

A handling fee always applies to the transportation of firearms. On flights within Finland and Europe, the fee is €60 per firearm, and on flights to/from Asia, North America and the Middle East €110/$120 per firearm. For journeys between Europe and Australia, New Zealand and Fiji the handling fee is €130.

The handling fee includes one (1) extra piece of baggage up to 23 kg. A firearm and ammunition must be packed in separate suitcases. If the baggage allowance (ticketed allowance plus the one piece of extra baggage included in the handling fee) is exceeded, an extra bag charge applies. Read more about transporting firearms.

Musical instruments 

You can carry your musical instrument as checked baggage in the hold of the aircraft when it fits within the size limits: a maximum of 23kg (50lb) and external dimensions no more than 90cm x 75cm x 45cm (35in x 30in x 18in). Some exceptions to external dimensions apply: For example, guitars and medium-sized keyboards are considered standard bags.

Larger musical instruments up to 32 kg and/or 190 cm x 75 cm x 65 cm can be carried for an additional heavy bag charge. If you travel with a Business Classic or Business Flex ticket type on Finnair long-haul flights, you can buy regular extra checked baggage (23 kg/50 lb) in advance, but can take up to 32 kg/70 lb per bag – the same weight as the two bags included in your allowance. Pets 

You will need to pay a fee for transporting pets, with the exception of guide dogs and duty dogs. The fee depends on your destination and whether your pet will travel in the cabin or in the hold of the aircraft. See the Pets on Finnair flights page for more information on size and weight limits. The fee needs to be paid in advance.

You can purchase transportation for pets in the cabin for Finnair flights (AY code on the ticket and operated by Finnair) online at the same time when booking your flights. If you already have a booking, you can pay the fee for your pet travelling in the cabin online via Manage booking.

If your pet needs to travel in the hold of the aircraft, please notify us about your pet via our chat service. Please make the booking for a pet travelling in the hold at least 7 days before your flight. You will also get a payment link via the chat.
