Corporate responsibility and Finnair
For us at Finnair, corporate responsibility is a part of what we do every day and to achieve this, we work continuously with many different groups. Below, you’ll find examples of what we’ve done this year.
Finnair evacuated Finnish citizens from Egypt
Due to the political unrest in Egypt, The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland evacuated all Finnish nationals in the country. We organised evacuation flights for independent travellers in Egypt, and worked together with travel agencies to evacuate travellers on a package tour.
Change for good campaign raised money for Indian children
We continue to work together with UNICEF to bring clean water to Indian children in need. This year, we raised over €50,000 for the Change for Good programme.
We raised the funds on our international flights between 29 November 2010 and 9 January 2011. We also donated €0.50 for every new Finnair fan on Facebook. A huge thank you to all our customers and fans for taking part!
Collecting environmental data for meteorological institutes
Finnair collects weather observation data for Euro Amdar, the association of meteorological institutes. The precise measuring instruments used in the automatic pilot and navigation systems in aircrafts are utilised to make weather observations. The measured data improves the number of weather observations in Northern Europe and Finland in particular.
We have signed the UN women’s empowerment principles
We are the first company in Finland to sign the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles. The principles offer guidance on how to implement efficient equality policies and empower women in the workplace, and promote equality and sustainable development.
Finnair Cargo assists in Sichuan reconstruction
Finnair Cargo participated in providing urgent assistance to the Sichuan province of China in recovering from the destruction caused by an earthquake. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Finnair Cargo flew Red Cross tents into the area and during the reconstruction, Finnair Cargo was involved in the construction of a new school.
Our vision guides us
Our vision is to become the most attractive alternative for all quality-conscious green air passengers in trans-continental traffic in the northern hemisphere. We build our vision using success factors: a functional Asian strategy and our strong geographical competitive edge.
We switched off all commercial lighting during Earth Hour
We took part in the international Earth Hour campaign for the first time in 2009 by switching off all our commercial lighting at Helsinki Airport for the duration of the whole weekend.
In 2010, nearly a billion private citizens – along with numerous companies, educational institutions and other organizations – took part in the campaign. We will be participating in the campaign also this year.
Energy-Saving Week cuts energy consumption
Every autumn, Finnair arranges an Energy-Saving Week. During the week, employees are given tips on energy-saving work practices and instructions on how to save energy easily in their everyday lives — both at work and at home.
We recycle over half of the waste generated on board our flights
In 2011 we recycled 46% of the waste generated on board our flights, which is 8% more than the previous year. Today, we recycle more than 50% of all generated waste.
Globe Hope and Finnair give new life to old uniforms
Known for its ecological fashion, award-winning company Globe Hope makes clothes and accessories from second-hand materials. Globe Hope has also come up with recycled designs using Finnair uniforms. The dark blue fabric used by Finnair in the jackets and ties of its employees was turned into stylish toiletry bags.
The new Finnair Corporate Responsibility Report is more extensive than ever before
Finnair has published its Corporate Responsibility Report 2010 based on the international Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines. Finnair was one of the first airlines in the world to start reporting according to the GRI Guidelines. This year, especial attention has been paid to developing the reporting process in the area of social responsibility.
Finnair helping Japan and Madagascar
To date, we have donated over three million Finnair Plus points to help the reconstruction efforts in Japan and almost half a million points to a reforestation programme in Madagascar. In Japan the donated points are enough for example 1,000 blankets and water bottles or over 5,000 kg of tinned food. In Madagascar, almost 1,500 tree seedlings can be planted with the donated points. A huge thank you to all of you who have made this happen!
Donate points to Madagascar
Finnair is participating in a development cooperation project in Madagascar in cooperation with the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation. The purpose of the development project is to create an effective reforestation programme in the environment of a 1,500-inhabitant village community. By donating points, Finnair Plus members can fund the planting of one or more trees in a Madagascar forest within the project area. For example, with a donation of 1,000 points the Finnair Plus member can participate in the planting of three tree seedlings.
We donated 2,000 blankets to Burmese refugees
We participated in helping the Burmese refugees in Thailand by donating 2,000 blankets for the Finnish Refugee Council. The Council will then distribute the blankets to the people in need. There’s a constant influx of Burmese refugees crossing the border into Thailand, so every bit of help counts.
Use your Finnair Plus points to give help in Japan
Finnair Plus members can now donate their Plus points to the Japanese Red Cross. The donated funds will be used to help the victims of the earthquakes and tsunami in north-east Japan. You can give donations of 3,000, 5,000 or 10,000 points. All donated points will go to the Finnish Red Cross, who will in turn forward them to the Japanese Red Cross.
Finnair is proud to wear the Pink Ribbon
We firmly believe that breast cancer research is extremely important. That’s why we’ll be taking part in this year’s Pink Ribbon campaign, helping collect funds and raise breast cancer awareness. Finnair customers will also be able to take part in the campaign and give their support.
Finnair experiments flying with biofuel
Supporting sustainable development is very important to us. Lately we have taken some major steps towards making our flights more environmentally friendly: we flew the longest commercial biofuel flight in the world, from Amsterdam to Helsinki. We’re also planning to carry out at least two similar flights in the near future.
Did you know?
The water bottles used on our flights are recycled into whiffle balls for use in floorball.
Donate your Finnair Plus points to charity
If you have points that are about to expire, why not put them into good use and donate them to the Red Cross disaster relief fund? The donated points will be directed to where they are most needed, like Nepal, East Africa and other countries suffering from hunger and crises.
The visual renewal is in action
We are currently renewing our visual identity, which includes the company logo, aircraft livery as well as the appearance of the cabins and new uniforms. The old leftover materials will be handed to our partners, including Globe Hope, The Association of Friends of the University Children’s Hospital and the Red Cross to be re-used and recycled.
Smart energy use
In October we took part in the annual and global energy saving week, the aim of which is to pay attention to heating and use of clean water and the efficient use of materials. In co-operation with YIT we have been boosting the energy use in our establishments already since 2007.
Saving forests
We have been sponsoring the environmental protection project of the ENO online school, which was started in Joensuu in 2000. The aim of the global project is to plant a hundred million trees before 2017. Students for example in Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia have already taken part in the campaign by planting millions of trees.
Finnair is taking big steps in carbon disclosure and emission diminishing
This year we achieved the best score compared to other Nordic airlines in the Carbon Disclosure Project, CDP. We were acknowledged for our notably decreased greenhouse gas emissions, better reporting and for having recognised the risks related to climate change.
